Oyo Police robbery syndicate arrest sees 10 suspects nabbed in Ibadan, with ₦100m stolen goods recovered in major operation

The Oyo State Police Command has dismantled a suspected armed robbery syndicate in Ibadan, arresting ten suspects and recovering stolen items valued at about ₦100 million in a decisive operation.

Police spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed in a statement on Sunday that the arrests followed weeks of intelligence-led surveillance around the Genesis Hotel area in Challenge.

According to the statement, operatives stormed the gang’s hideout and apprehended the suspects, who are believed to be part of a notorious network involved in hijacking containers and diverting goods across state lines.

Recovered exhibits include 40 air conditioners, 10 washing machines, an electric motorcycle, trailer spare parts, furniture materials, LED lights, and other household and commercial items.

“The criminal gang, known for hijacking containers at gunpoint and diverting valuable goods, operates across state lines and was intercepted, leading to the arrest of ten suspects at the scene,” Ayanlade said.

He added that the suspects had confessed to their roles in the crimes and were cooperating with investigators, with their statements aiding efforts to track down other fleeing members of the syndicate.

The Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Abimbola, commended officers involved in the operation, describing it as a remarkable breakthrough in the fight against organised crime in the state.

Abimbola also praised members of the public for providing credible intelligence, noting that community cooperation remains critical to effective policing.

As part of ongoing investigations, the police have invited the management of the hotel linked to the suspects for questioning, citing concerns that criminal elements often use such facilities to plan operations.

The command assured residents that the suspects would be charged in court upon conclusion of investigations and urged continued vigilance and public support to sustain the crackdown on criminal activities.
