Ogun School Gas Leak in Ijebu Ode hospitalizes 32 people as Governor Dapo Abiodun orders closure of OLAS schools and investigation into the incident

The Ogun School Gas Leak incident occurred shortly after morning assembly when a mysterious gaseous substance reportedly spread across the school premises, making breathing difficult for students and staff.

Several pupils began vomiting and fainting, prompting the school authorities to call emergency services.

According to the Vice Principal, Mrs Adeola Borogun, the situation escalated quickly after the strange chemical odour was detected, forcing urgent evacuation and medical intervention.

Affected individuals were taken to the State General Hospital in Ijebu Ode for treatment.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Banjo Adeoye, confirmed that most of the patients are now in stable condition, though the exact substance responsible for the incident has yet to be identified.

In response, Governor Abiodun directed security agencies and environmental authorities to commence a full investigation into the cause of the leak.

The directive, conveyed through the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, also mandates the deployment of gas analysis equipment by the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency to trace the source of the chemical.

The governor further ordered the establishment of a situation room at the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode, to provide free medical care to affected students and residents in surrounding communities, including Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto, and Oke-Aje market.

Authorities have urged residents not to panic, assuring that there is no immediate security threat linked to the incident.

Officials say ongoing assessments will determine whether the leak originated from industrial activity, environmental factors, or other causes.

Government officials, alongside local government representatives, have visited both the school and the hospital to assess the situation and coordinate response efforts as investigations continue.
