Nse Ikpe-Etim Language Discrimination comments spark reflection as the actress speaks on cultural identity and dialect bias in Nigeria

Nollywood actress Nse Ikpe-Etim has spoken candidly about her experiences with language and cultural identity, revealing that she was once advised not to publicly identify with Akwa Ibom if she wanted to advance her career.

Nse Ikpe-Etim made the revelation in an interview, where she reflected on the pressure many individuals face to downplay their roots in order to fit into broader industry expectations.

The actress emphasised that she has consistently resisted such pressures, choosing instead to embrace her Ibibio heritage.

In 2022, Nse Ikpe-Etim featured in the film The American King, where she portrayed an African high priestess alongside musician Akon. In the role, she incorporated the Ibibio language as part of her cultural expression on screen.

Nse Ikpe-Etim stated that she remains firm in her commitment to cultural representation, insisting that no script should discourage her from speaking her dialect.

She described such expectations as a form of “language discrimination,” arguing that identity should not be suppressed for acceptance.

Her comments have since sparked wider conversation about how Nigerians relate to indigenous languages and cultural perception across different ethnic groups.

Observers have also noted growing sensitivity around regional stereotypes and the subtle biases that can emerge in everyday interactions, particularly in entertainment and social spaces.
