JUST IN: Armed herders kill five in Benue

Suspected armed herders have killed five people in a fresh attack on Tse Ameen community in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State. Four bodies were officially recovered

Suspected armed herders have killed five people in a fresh attack on the Tse Ameen community in Mbapa Council Ward, Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State.

According to residents, the attackers invaded the peaceful community on Saturday night and unleashed terror on the sleeping villagers.

A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity in a telephone interview on Monday, said five bodies were recovered on Sunday, comprising three males and two females. He added that many others were still missing.

However, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the attack but said four dead bodies were recovered.

“The incident is confirmed, four dead bodies were recovered,” she stated.

The attack comes barely two days after Governor Hyacinth Alia sympathised with the people of Gwer West while hosting abducted passengers who regained their freedom at the Government House on Sunday.

The governor had urged security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

The latest violence has once again heightened fears of insecurity in the agrarian communities of Benue State, where clashes between farmers and herders have remained a recurring challenge.
