According to residents, the attackers invaded the peaceful community on Saturday night and unleashed terror on the sleeping villagers.
A local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity in a telephone interview on Monday, said five bodies were recovered on Sunday, comprising three males and two females. He added that many others were still missing.
However, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, DSP Udeme Edet, confirmed the attack but said four dead bodies were recovered.
“The incident is confirmed, four dead bodies were recovered,” she stated.
The attack comes barely two days after Governor Hyacinth Alia sympathised with the people of Gwer West while hosting abducted passengers who regained their freedom at the Government House on Sunday.
The governor had urged security agencies to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
