Arsenal VAR controversy draw sees Gunners held 1-1 by Atletico Madrid after a late penalty decision is overturned in Champions League semi-final

Arsenal Football Club were left frustrated at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid on Thursday after a tense 1-1 draw with Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final was overshadowed by a late Arsenal VAR controversy draw involving a disallowed penalty decision.

The decisive flashpoint arrived in the 78th minute when referee Danny Makkelie initially awarded Arsenal a third penalty of the night after Eberechi Eze went down under a challenge from David Hancko.

However, following a VAR review, the decision was overturned, with officials ruling the contact insufficient, sparking anger among Arsenal players and relief among the home supporters.

Arsenal had earlier taken the lead through Viktor Gyökeres, who confidently converted from the spot after being brought down by Hancko.

The hosts responded before half-time when Julian Alvarez levelled from the penalty spot after Ben White was penalised for handball following another VAR intervention.

The match, played at high intensity, saw Arsenal dominate possession in the first half with composed attacking play, as they pushed for a rare Champions League final appearance.

However, Diego Simeone’s side, led by Diego Simeone, emerged stronger after the interval, applying sustained pressure on the visitors.

Atlético came close to turning the tie in their favour, with Antoine Griezmann striking the crossbar and Alvarez narrowly missing with a curling free-kick before being forced off through injury.

Ademola Lookman also tested Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya but was denied from close range.

Arsenal responded late on, with substitute Cristhian Mosquera forcing a strong save from Jan Oblak as the visitors pushed for a winner that ultimately never came.

The closing stages were defined by the disallowed penalty incident involving Eze, with VAR once again taking centre stage in a match already shaped by technology and fine margins.

The reversal triggered loud celebrations from Atlético supporters, while Arsenal were left visibly incensed.

Despite the disappointment, Arsenal remain firmly in the tie heading into the second leg in London. The winner will face either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in the final.

Arsenal striker Gyökeres later admitted frustration at the outcome but insisted the team remained confident.

He acknowledged the difficulty of the encounter while pointing to the advantage of playing the return leg at home.

The Arsenal VAR controversy draw leaves the semi-final finely balanced, with both sides still believing they have the momentum to reach the final.
