IGP Disu dismisses ASP Usman over fatal shooting

Police dismiss ASP Nuhu Usman and others over fatal Efunrun shooting in Delta State, with prosecution approved following disciplinary findings

Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the dismissal and prosecution of Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman and other officers over the killing of a suspect in Efunrun, Delta State, Nigeria, on Wednesday, April 30, 2026.

The decision follows the conclusion of the Force Disciplinary Committee’s investigation, which established that the officers acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and other regulations governing the use of firearms.

Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, confirmed that the committee reviewed the incident alongside other internal disciplinary processes and found the officers culpable. The panel subsequently recommended their immediate dismissal.

The Inspector-General approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.

The case sparked public outrage after a viral video surfaced showing the suspect restrained with hands tied behind his back before being shot by a police officer in Efunrun.

The footage, widely shared on social media, triggered renewed calls for accountability and justice, placing additional pressure on the police leadership to act decisively.

Delta State Police spokesperson, Bright Edafe, had earlier confirmed that ASP Nuhu Usman was arrested and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings shortly after the incident came to light.

Authorities further stated that the dismissed officers will face prosecution after administrative procedures are concluded, in line with legal provisions on unlawful use of force.

The Inspector-General of Police restated the Force’s zero tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions, stressing that no officer has the authority to take life outside the law.

He also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, Mr Mene Ogidi, describing the incident as painful and assuring that justice would be pursued transparently.

Police leadership urged calm among the public, reaffirming its commitment to discipline, accountability, and respect for human rights across all operations.

The development is being viewed as a strong disciplinary signal within the Force aimed at reinforcing operational restraint and restoring public trust.
