Egbin Power accident investigation launched after contractor died during maintenance in Lagos, triggering shutdown and power disruptions
An investigation has been launched into a fatal industrial accident at Egbin Power Plc following the death of a contractor during underwater maintenance operations at the facility in Lagos State.

The management of the power generation company confirmed the incident on Thursday, describing it as a deeply tragic development that has prompted emergency safety responses and regulatory engagement.
Investigation launched into Egbin Power accident incident follows reports that the incident occurred on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, during maintenance work at the plant’s lagoon-based pump house.
The accident reportedly led to a partial shutdown of operations and a temporary disconnection from the national electricity grid.
Sources indicated that the deceased contractor, who was engaged as a diver for underwater maintenance, was working inside the water system when a pump allegedly activated unexpectedly.
The contractor was reportedly trapped in the impeller, resulting in fatal injuries.
Operations in the affected section were immediately suspended as safety protocols were activated, a decision that later contributed to a wider operational shutdown while investigations commenced.
Checks further revealed that the plant recorded zero megawatt generation on both Wednesday and Thursday, underscoring the scale of the disruption caused by the incident.
Egbin Power Plc, Nigeria’s largest electricity generation facility with an installed capacity of 1,320MW, confirmed that emergency response measures were swiftly deployed and relevant authorities were notified in line with safety procedures.
In a statement, the company expressed profound sorrow over the loss, extending condolences to the family, colleagues, and loved ones of the deceased contractor while reaffirming its commitment to a full and transparent review of the incident.
The company added that it is cooperating with law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy, noting that a comprehensive safety review is already underway.
The management further stressed its commitment to maintaining strict health and safety standards across all operations, including those involving external contractors.

Meanwhile, the shutdown of the facility has reportedly contributed to power disruptions in parts of the national grid, affecting electricity supply in areas serviced by the plant.
