Sanwo-Olu praises Tinubu Green Line approval, calling it a milestone that will boost mobility and ease traffic in Lagos

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council for approving Phase 1A of the Lagos Green Line Rail Project, describing the decision as a transformative step for urban transport.

Sanwo-Olu made the remarks on Friday via his official social media platform, expressing gratitude on behalf of the state government and residents.

He characterised the approval as a significant milestone, noting that the Green Line will span approximately 68 kilometres from Marina to the Lekki Free Trade Zone, with about 17 stations planned across key areas including Victoria Island, Ajah and the Lekki corridor.

The governor said the project is expected to serve up to 500,000 passengers daily at inception, with capacity projected to rise to one million over time.

He added that the rail system would be capable of transporting up to 35,000 passengers per hour in each direction, a development he said would dramatically reduce travel time and ease pressure on Lagos’ overstretched road network.

Sanwo-Olu emphasised the broader economic and social benefits of the project, describing it as a bold investment in mobility, economic growth and improved quality of life for residents.

He also acknowledged the continued support of the Federal Government, stating that the state remains committed to delivering a modern rail system that meets the needs of its growing population.

The Lagos Green Line is part of wider efforts to modernise the city’s transport infrastructure and address long-standing congestion challenges in Africa’s largest urban centre.
