Gombe truck crash policewoman death confirmed after brake failure accident at New Mile 3 Market claims lives and injures others along Gombe–Yola highway

A female police officer, Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina, and one other person have died following a devastating truck accident that occurred at New Mile 3 Market along the Gombe–Yola highway on Wednesday, after a heavily loaded vehicle reportedly suffered brake failure and rammed into roadside shops.

The tragic incident involved a DAF truck carrying bags of grain which lost control before crashing into shops, pedestrians, motorcycles and traders in the busy market area, according to eyewitness accounts.

The incident was confirmed by the Gombe State Police Command, which stated that the vehicle also damaged multiple shops and three motorcycles during the collision.

Police spokesperson Buhari Abdullahi said preliminary findings indicated that the driver was attempting to enter a filling station through a one-way route when the truck’s brakes failed, leading to the fatal crash.

“As a result of the accident, two persons, namely Woman Police Constable Sharifa Gaina and one unidentified male pedestrian, regrettably lost their lives,” he said, adding that two others, including the driver, sustained injuries and were receiving treatment.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as the out-of-control truck struck unsuspecting traders and passersby in the crowded market area, leaving destruction in its wake.

The Gombe State Police Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the crash, including possible traffic violations and mechanical failure.

Commissioner of Police Umar Ahmed Chuso warned motorists to avoid reckless driving and ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles, stressing that many road accidents are preventable.
