The Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos, Nigeria, on June 25, 2026, has confirmed the arrest and remand of a 22-year-old woman and a nurse over their alleged involvement in a N16.17 million pregnancy and abortion-related scam that reportedly defrauded a complainant through false medical claims.
The development was disclosed by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the FCID Annex, Lagos, Mr Simeon Akpanudom, during a press briefing on the command’s operational achievements between March 30 and June 25, 2026.
The Lagos pregnancy scam N16.17m arrest case reportedly began after a petition was filed by the victim’s boyfriend, who alleged that the 22-year-old suspect falsely claimed to be pregnant and repeatedly demanded funds for antenatal care, medical treatment and related expenses.
Investigators stated that the total amount allegedly obtained from the complainant amounted to N16.17 million, raising concerns over sustained deception and coordinated financial exploitation.
Mr Akpanudom said: “The total amount obtained from the complainant is N16.17 million.”
He further revealed that investigations showed the pregnancy was allegedly terminated at about five months’ gestation at a private medical facility in the Ajah area of Lagos, adding another layer to the unfolding criminal inquiry.
The police confirmed that both the primary suspect and the nurse involved have been remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the medical director of the facility allegedly linked to the procedure.
The FCID also noted that the case forms part of broader operational successes recorded during the review period, which included investigations into counterfeit goods, vandalism of critical infrastructure, and human trafficking cases across Lagos State.
Authorities recovered several exhibits linked to suspected telecom infrastructure vandalism, while 45 victims of human trafficking were rescued and multiple suspects arrested in related operations.
The police command reaffirmed its commitment to tackling economic crimes and urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to support ongoing investigations and crime prevention efforts.
