Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France defeated Sweden 3-0 to advance to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Bradley Barcola also on target in a commanding display

Kylian Mbappe produced another dazzling performance, scoring twice as France defeated Sweden 3-0 on Tuesday to secure a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

The French captain found the net on either side of Bradley Barcola’s second-half strike, sending Didier Deschamps’ side through in impressive style and setting up a knockout meeting with Paraguay.

The victory further cemented France’s reputation as one of the leading contenders for the trophy.

France controlled much of the encounter but had to show patience before breaking the deadlock in first-half stoppage time.

Mbappe collected a pass from Ousmane Dembele and produced a brilliant solo run to beat the Swedish defence, giving Les Bleus a deserved 1-0 lead.

The reigning world champions extended their advantage eight minutes after the restart when Michael Olise delivered a precise ball for Barcola, who finished calmly to make it 2-0.

Mbappe then sealed the comfortable win in the 74th minute, latching onto another accurate delivery from Olise to register his second goal of the night and sixth of the tournament, drawing level with Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.

Sweden found it difficult to contain France’s attacking flair and created few clear opportunities, despite some late moments for Viktor Gyokeres. Goalkeeper Mike Maignan was rarely tested but remained alert to preserve a clean sheet.

Michael Olise continued his outstanding tournament form, registering another assist to take his tally to five – the highest by any player at a single World Cup since Thomas Häßler achieved the same feat for Germany in 1994.

The emphatic result highlighted France’s attacking depth and defensive solidity as they progress deeper into the competition.

Mbappe once again proved his decisive influence on the biggest stage, while Sweden bowed out after failing to match the quality of their opponents.
