Buhari first remembrance prayers announced for July 13

Former presidential media aide Bashir Ahmad has announced that the Buhari First Remembrance Prayers will be held on Monday, July 13, 2026, to mark one year since the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

Ahmad made the announcement on Tuesday through a statement shared on his official X account, confirming that the gathering will bring together family members, former aides, political associates and supporters in solemn reflection.

Ahmad said the remembrance event would celebrate Buhari’s life, public service and enduring contribution to Nigeria while offering prayers for Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.

“On Monday, July 13th, we will gather in solemn remembrance to honour the life, legacy and enduring service of our late boss, former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, one year after his passing,” Ahmad wrote.

The former presidential aide described Buhari as a leader who served Nigeria with “commitment, integrity, discipline and patriotism”, adding that the late president’s contributions to national development would remain part of the country’s history.

Ahmad also called on Nigerians to join family members and associates in praying for Buhari’s eternal rest and for comfort for those he left behind.

“May Allah grant him eternal rest. Ameen,” the statement concluded.

Muhammadu Buhari died on July 13, 2025, aged 82, at a clinic in London after a prolonged illness.

His remains were repatriated to Nigeria and buried in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s democratically elected President from May 29, 2015, to May 29, 2023.

His victory in the 2015 presidential election marked a watershed moment in the country’s democratic history, making him the first opposition candidate to defeat a sitting president through the ballot box.

He secured a second term in 2019 and completed eight years in office before handing over to his successor in 2023.

Before returning to power through democratic elections, Buhari served as Nigeria’s military Head of State between 1983 and 1985 following a military coup.

His political career was defined by a strong anti-corruption agenda, infrastructure development initiatives and security campaigns, although his administration also faced criticism over economic challenges, insecurity and human rights concerns.

The remembrance prayers are expected to provide a reflective moment for family members, former government officials, political allies and supporters to honour Buhari’s legacy and consider his lasting impact on Nigeria’s political development.
