Enugu varsity suspends three law students for exam malpractice

The Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) has suspended three Faculty of Law undergraduates for two academic years over examination malpractice in Enugu on Monday, 10 August 2026, while a fourth law student was cleared of a related allegation.

The university said the suspension of Isong Ugwu, Gad Nwosu and Roseline Nnamani took effect on 25 June 2026 and will remain in force until 24 June 2028.

The decision was communicated through separate memos signed by ESUT Registrar Ambrose Ugwu and made available to journalists in Enugu.

The three students, comprising two males and one female, were identified by the university as Isong Ugwu, registration number ESUT/2023030212973, Gad Nwosu, registration number ESUT/2022030203441, and Roseline Nnamani, registration number ESUT/2024030219772.

According to the Registrar, Vice-Chancellor Professor Aloysius-Michaels Okolie approved the recommendations of the Senate Examinations Malpractice Committee on behalf of the University Senate.

The university subsequently directed the affected students to surrender any institutional property in their possession to their respective Heads of Department and leave the campus immediately.

“the students will be required to apply for readmission upon the expiration of their suspension in June 2028,” Ugwu said.

The university also informed the students’ sponsors and the National Universities Commission of the disciplinary action.

The decision represents a firm stance by the institution against examination malpractice, an offence that continues to challenge academic integrity across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.

However, the university’s action did not affect every student investigated in connection with the matter.

Goodluck Iwuamadi, another Faculty of Law student with registration number ESUT/2025030227502, was exonerated after the Senate Examinations Malpractice Committee reviewed the allegation against him.

Ugwu said Iwuamadi’s clearance was also based on the committee’s recommendation.

The contrasting outcomes underline the importance of the university’s disciplinary review process, with sanctions imposed on three students while another student was cleared after consideration of the evidence.

For Ugwu, the disciplinary measures mean that the three suspended students will have to remain away from academic activities for two years before they can seek readmission.

The suspension therefore extends beyond a temporary classroom penalty, potentially affecting the students’ academic progression and graduation timelines.

The case also highlights the wider responsibility of universities to protect the credibility of their examinations while ensuring that allegations are considered through established disciplinary procedures.

With the suspension running until 24 June 2028, the three students will have to wait until the end of the prescribed period before applying to return to the university.
