US Embassy Abuja stays open as visa processing shifts

Routine US visa services moved to Lagos from August 1, while the Abuja embassy continues its diplomatic and consular operations.

The United States Embassy in Abuja remains operational despite the transfer of routine visa processing to Lagos, the United States Mission in Nigeria said on Monday, 10 August 2026, following the US Department of State’s decision to realign visa services across several African countries.

The clarification is significant for Nigerian applicants who may have interpreted the relocation of routine visa processing as a wider reduction or closure of US diplomatic operations in Abuja.

The US Mission said the change affects visa processing alone and does not alter the status of the embassy or the wider work carried out by American diplomatic personnel in Nigeria.

“The realignment of routine visa processing does not change the operating status of any of the embassies and consulates or the important work they continue to conduct on behalf of the American people,” the mission said in a statement posted on its official X account.

The Department of State announced the regional realignment on 15 July, describing it as part of a broader effort to strengthen national security, improve efficiency and promote more consistent screening, vetting and adjudication standards.

The new arrangement took effect on 1 August 2026 and covers routine non-immigrant and immigrant visa services previously handled at designated posts, including Abuja.

For Nigerian applicants, Lagos is the designated regional visa hub. This means people seeking routine US visas must now use the appropriate processing location in Lagos rather than Abuja.

The change covers a wide range of applications, including tourist and business visas, petition-based non-immigrant visas, immediate-relative and family-preference immigrant visas, employment-based categories, fiancé and fiancée visas, adoption cases, Diversity Visas and certain follow-to-join cases.

The shift does not, however, invalidate visas already issued. The State Department expressly stated that currently valid visas are not affected by the realignment.

Applicants with appointments at posts where routine visa services have been discontinued have been advised to check their email for specific instructions from the US authorities.

The department also warned that applicants who had already paid the Machine Readable Visa fee at an affected post needed to schedule their appointments within the applicable deadline.

It said fees would not be refunded simply because an applicant failed to schedule an appointment by the stated date.

For immigrant visa applicants, the medical examination requirement remains in place.

The State Department said applicants may complete the examination in their home country where an approved panel physician is available, or at the designated regional visa hub.

The realignment is part of a wider restructuring of routine US visa operations in Africa.

Abuja is among several posts where routine visa processing has been transferred to regional hubs, while Lagos is one of the locations designated to handle those services.

The State Department said the policy follows a long-standing practice of consolidating visa operations at selected locations.

It said similar arrangements had previously been used in other African countries and in Europe.

For Nigerians, the most immediate practical effect is therefore not the closure of an embassy but a change in where routine visa interviews and related processing take place.

The Abuja embassy continues to function as a diplomatic mission, even though applicants seeking routine US visas now have to look to Lagos for the relevant processing services.

The distinction is particularly important as visa applicants navigate the new arrangement.

The US Department of State’s current visa guidance confirms that residents of countries where routine operations have been realigned should apply at the designated alternate processing post for their country of residence or nationality.

Other US immigration restrictions also remain separate from the Abuja-to-Lagos processing change.

The State Department said visa suspensions under Presidential Proclamation 10998, visa bond requirements and immigrant visa pauses affecting certain nationalities remain in force.

The latest clarification therefore offers a measure of reassurance amid the administrative change: the US Embassy in Abuja has not closed, but its role in routine visa processing has changed.

For prospective travellers, students, families, business visitors and immigrants, the practical priority is now to confirm the correct Lagos processing location, appointment requirements and current visa guidance before making travel or application arrangements.
