The US president's provocative declaration has intensified an already tense standoff with Iran over the strategic waterway.

Trump claims Hormuz as US territory, Iran pushes back

United States President Donald Trump has escalated the confrontation with Iran by sharing a map on Truth Social depicting the Strait of Hormuz as “NEW U.S. Territory”, intensifying a dispute over control of one of the world’s most important maritime energy routes.

Trump shared the graphic on Tuesday, August 18, while the official White House account also posted the same image on X, giving the extraordinary territorial claim an official presidential platform.

The graphic highlights the strategic waterway between Iran and Oman and labels the area “NEW U.S. Territory”. Trump did not provide a detailed legal explanation alongside the image.

The post follows Trump’s increasingly forceful comments about the waterway. Speaking at a political rally in New York State on Friday, Trump said he would declare the Strait of Hormuz a US territory after the United States defeated Iran.

“After we finish defeating Iran, which is being very badly defeated, pretty soon I’ll be declaring the Hormuz Strait a territory of the United States,” Trump said.

Trump subsequently described the proposal as “an excellent idea”, arguing that the United States effectively controls the waterway through its naval blockade.

The latest Trump Strait of Hormuz claim comes amid an increasingly dangerous confrontation between Washington and Tehran over maritime access.

The United States has imposed a naval blockade around Iranian ports, while Iran has maintained that vessels cannot freely pass through the waterway without its authorisation.

Reuters reported that competing claims over control of Hormuz have sharply increased tensions between the two countries.

Iran has rejected Washington’s claims.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi warned Trump on Tuesday that his claim concerning the Strait of Hormuz would either be corrected or face a response from Iran.

The dispute has also become entangled with stalled diplomatic efforts. Reuters reported on Tuesday that Iran had declared the strait would remain closed until Washington met conditions linked to an interim agreement, including lifting the blockade of Iranian ports, removing oil sanctions, releasing frozen Iranian assets and halting military threats and operations.

The waterway’s importance extends far beyond the immediate US-Iran confrontation.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and sits between Iran and Oman.

Its narrow passage is one of the world’s critical energy chokepoints.

According to the US Energy Information Administration, oil flows through Hormuz averaged 20.9 million barrels per day in the first half of 2025, equivalent to about 20 per cent of global petroleum liquids consumption.

More recent EIA data indicate that flows fell to an average of 14.6 million barrels per day in the first quarter of 2026, reflecting the growing disruption around the waterway.

Any prolonged disruption therefore carries consequences well beyond the Middle East, with potential effects on crude prices, shipping costs, energy security and inflation in countries that rely heavily on Gulf supplies.

The latest escalation has already contributed to heightened uncertainty in energy markets.

Reuters reported that shipping traffic through Hormuz had fallen below its monthly average as competing US and Iranian claims over the waterway intensified.

Trump’s territorial language also raises a separate question of international law and sovereignty.

The Strait is not simply an unclaimed body of water that can be acquired through a presidential declaration or military presence.

Its waters and navigation rights are governed by international maritime law and involve the interests of surrounding states, including Iran and Oman.

For that reason, Trump’s social media declaration should not be interpreted as evidence that the United States has legally acquired the Strait of Hormuz as US territory.

Instead, the announcement represents a dramatic political and strategic assertion at a time when American and Iranian forces are already contesting access to the waterway.

The development marks another sharp turn in Trump’s rhetoric. On August 12, the US president claimed that Washington had “total control” of the Strait of Hormuz, while describing the American naval blockade as a “WALL OF STEEL”.

Iran rejected that assertion, with its officials insisting that Tehran remained in control of the passage.

The competing claims have added to fears that the confrontation could move beyond rhetoric, particularly after Iran threatened to adopt a “fully offensive” military posture if diplomacy with Washington failed.

For global markets, the immediate concern is whether the confrontation produces a prolonged interruption to shipping.

For Washington and Tehran, however, the dispute is increasingly about strategic control, military leverage and the terms of any eventual settlement.

Trump’s latest map has therefore added a striking new layer to an already volatile confrontation.

Whether it becomes a negotiating position, a political message or a precursor to further action remains unclear.

What is clear is that the Strait of Hormuz has become one of the most consequential flashpoints in the US-Iran confrontation, with any further escalation capable of sending ripples through global energy markets.
