Dangote Foundation gets major mandate to transform Kano youth skills

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Secretary to the State Government Umar Farouk Ibrahim, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Abdulkareem Maude and representatives of the Aliko Dangote Foundation signed a 20-year management agreement for the Aliko Dangote Ultra-Modern Skills Acquisition Centre in Kano in a move aimed at revitalising vocational and entrepreneurial training for young people across the state.

The agreement was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding at the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, with the Kano State Government handing management of the centre to the Aliko Dangote Foundation for two decades.

The foundation was represented at the signing by its Programme Manager for the North, Sanusi Abdulkadir, and Programme Support Officer, Mustapha Umar.

Governor Yusuf, represented by the SSG, said the arrangement was intended to unlock the centre’s potential and place it on a stronger institutional footing.

“The foundation possesses the technical and managerial expertise needed to transform the centre into one of the leading entrepreneurial and vocational training institutions in Nigeria and the West African sub-region,” Yusuf said.

The agreement comes after months of discussion over the future of the facility, including at the federal level.

In July, the National Council on Skills discussed the proposed takeover of the centre by the Dangote Foundation.

Education Minister Tunji Alausa said the partnership between the Kano government and the centre was being finalised as part of broader efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s skills development infrastructure.

The latest agreement therefore marks the formal progression of a process that had already been under consideration by the federal and state authorities.

The centre has also been the subject of contrasting reports about its level of activity. In April, the Federal Ministry of Education said the facility was operational under its Technical and Vocational Education and Training programme, following concerns raised by videos circulating online about its condition.

The ministry said 300 trainees had been undergoing training in leather works, solar photovoltaic installation and hospitality at the facility since November 2025.

It added that a delegation that visited the centre on 30 March found the trainees actively engaged in training.

That clarification is important because independent commentary published earlier in the year had raised concerns about unused equipment and the broader state of the centre.

A May report described workshops containing idle equipment and argued that the facility had struggled to fulfil its intended purpose.

The 20-year arrangement now offers an opportunity to address those concerns through a longer-term management structure rather than short-term interventions.

The Kano government said its decision followed deliberations by the State Executive Council, which approved the arrangement in the interest of adopting best practices in vocational training.

Yusuf also expressed confidence that Aliko Dangote, one of Kano’s most prominent business figures, would contribute his experience and resources to strengthening skills development in the state.

The centre was established under the administration of former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and named after Dangote.

Its original mandate was to provide young people with practical training across a broad range of technical and vocational fields.

Earlier documentation on the facility listed areas including electrical installation, refrigeration and air conditioning, computer engineering, welding and fabrication, automotive mechanics, catering and hospitality, plumbing, carpentry and technical drawing.

The centre’s role also fits into a wider national push to expand technical and vocational education as Nigeria seeks to address youth unemployment and develop a workforce with practical, industry-relevant skills.

The National Council on Skills has recently stressed the need to align training programmes with industry requirements and expand employment opportunities for young Nigerians.

The federal government has also been working towards greater coordination between skills-training agencies as part of its industrialisation agenda.

For Kano, the significance of the agreement extends beyond the physical facility.

A properly managed centre could provide young people with pathways into skilled employment, entrepreneurship and small-scale production while helping businesses access workers with practical technical abilities.

The 20-year tenure also gives the Dangote Foundation a considerably longer horizon within which to invest in equipment, training systems, instructors and programmes.

The immediate challenge will be turning the agreement into measurable outcomes.

Sustained funding, competent management, regular training cycles and clear standards for assessing graduates will determine whether the centre can fulfil the ambitious role envisaged by the state government.

The handover consequently represents more than a change in management.

It is a fresh attempt to convert a major skills-training facility into a productive asset for Kano’s young population and, potentially, a model for vocational education in the wider region.
