Bukayo Saka gave Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta a memorable 250th Premier League game in charge on Monday, August 31, 2026, scoring the decisive goal in Arsenal’s 1-0 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park in Birmingham to maintain the champions’ perfect start to the 2026/27 campaign.

The result gave Arsenal six points from their opening two league matches and another clean sheet, while Aston Villa were left without a point after consecutive defeats under Unai Emery.

Saka settled a tense contest in the 59th minute, finishing from close range after Riccardo Calafiori delivered a low cross following a well-worked Arsenal attack.

The goal was Saka’s second in two Premier League appearances this season and underlined his importance to an Arsenal side seeking to defend the title.

Arsenal had previously opened their campaign with a 3-0 victory over Coventry.

Villa, meanwhile, had been looking for a response after a bruising 4-0 defeat to Brighton in their opening fixture.

Despite a major overhaul of the squad during the summer, Emery’s side began with greater attacking intent at Villa Park.

Emiliano Buendia came closest to breaking the deadlock early on when his long-range effort struck the crossbar after 12 minutes.

Arsenal gradually established greater control of possession, but the champions struggled to create clear openings before half-time.

Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki also impressed on his Premier League debut, tipping Declan Rice’s header over the bar.

Arteta responded at the interval by introducing Eberechi Eze for Christos Tzolis, a change that helped Arsenal add more attacking movement.

Villa threatened again after the restart when Ian Maatsen fired over from a difficult angle, before becoming involved in a contentious moment at the other end.

Referee Jarred Gillett initially awarded Arsenal a penalty after Maatsen brought down Saka.

A VAR review, however, showed that the contact had occurred outside the penalty area, leading to the decision being overturned and an Arsenal free-kick being awarded instead.

Martin Odegaard sent the resulting effort narrowly wide.

Arsenal eventually found the breakthrough through a patient move.

Eze picked out Calafiori’s run into the area, and the Italian defender sent a low ball across the face of goal for Saka to bundle over the line.

The goal changed the complexion of the match, forcing Villa to commit more players forward in search of an equaliser.

That created space for Arsenal to exploit, although Suzuki kept Villa alive with an excellent save to deny Kai Havertz in a one-on-one situation.

Villa were unable to produce a shot on target throughout the match, continuing an extraordinary early-season attacking problem.

Emery’s side had now gone two Premier League matches without registering a shot on target.

The defeat also came during a period of significant change at Villa Park.

Several established players have departed during the summer, while Emery has overseen a substantial rebuilding programme.

Nicolas Jackson made his Villa debut after arriving from Chelsea, while Suzuki became the first Japanese goalkeeper to appear in the Premier League.

The goalkeeper showed encouraging composure despite the eventual defeat.

At the other end, Arsenal also introduced new faces.

Bruno Guimarães came off the bench for his Premier League debut, while Ezri Konsa made his first appearance for Arsenal against his former club after completing his move from Villa.

Konsa’s introduction added a particularly striking human element to an already competitive fixture, with his reception from Villa supporters reflecting the mixed emotions surrounding his return to his former home.

For Arteta, the victory marked a significant milestone.

The Spaniard recorded his 151st Premier League win in his 250 matches as Arsenal manager, placing him among an elite group of managers to reach the landmark with a single club.

Opta noted that Arteta became only the 10th manager in Premier League history to oversee 250 matches with one club.

Arteta described the result as a “massive win” and praised his players for navigating a difficult away fixture.

“It’s a tough place to come and earn three points. I think we deserved it,” Arteta said, adding that the substitutes also made a “magnificent” contribution to securing the victory.

Emery accepted the disappointment but said Villa could take encouragement from the performance.

“To lose one match is painful, but after feeling pain we have to get positive things,” Emery said. “There are 38 matches and we have played two matches and we don’t have a point.

But hopefully we can get better.”

The result continues an impressive opening for Arsenal, who have collected maximum points without conceding in their first two league matches.

The champions are among the teams with a perfect record at this early stage of the campaign.

The victory also highlighted a familiar quality in Arteta’s Arsenal: the ability to win even when the performance lacks the attacking fluency expected of a title-winning side.

For Villa, the immediate challenge is to turn encouraging passages of play into goals and points as Emery continues to rebuild his squad.

Arsenal now face another major test when Chelsea visit the Emirates on Sunday, September 6, while Villa will look to open their account against Hull City.

For Saka and Arteta, however, Monday night belonged to Arsenal.

A single goal was enough to deliver three points, preserve a perfect start and give the manager a fitting celebration for a milestone that has already become part of his growing legacy at the club.
