Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Nafiu Habib said on Monday 7 September 2026 that the Bauchi State Police Command had arrested 20-year-old Isiyaku Usman over a shocking Bauchi child assault in Darazo Local Government Area, after a seven-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted and robbed of two mobile phones.

Superintendent Habib released a statement setting out the command’s account of events on 6 September 2026. According to that statement, the child’s 37-year-old father, a resident of Kari village in Darazo, reported the matter to police the same morning.

Superintendent Habib said: “On the same date at about 0800hrs, the victim was on her way to a neighbouring house with two Android phones of the same make, Techno A31, when one Isiyaku Usman, 20 years old, of the same address, lured her into a nearby uncompleted building, robbed her of the phones and forcefully had sexual intercourse with her.”

Detectives arrested Isiyaku Usman shortly afterwards and recovered the two phones, the statement said.

Officers took the child and the suspect to Darazo General Hospital for medical examination and recorded statements from both.

Superintendent Habib said Isiyaku Usman had voluntarily confessed and remains in custody while inquiries continue.

The case is to be transferred to the Gender Laboratory of the State Criminal Investigation Department for further discreet work, after which a charge is expected.

Bauchi State Police Commissioner Sani-Omolori Aliyu condemned the alleged offence and restated the command’s zero tolerance for sexual and gender-based violence.

Through Superintendent Habib, Commissioner Aliyu urged parents and guardians to stay watchful over the movement and safety of children and pledged that the command would pursue justice.

The report sits within a wider pattern of public concern about offences against children in parts of northern Nigeria, where police commands have repeatedly appealed for faster reporting and closer adult supervision.

The command has also publicised other recent arrests linked to communal violence in the state, presenting those cases as evidence of a firmer operational stance.

Police accounts remain allegations until tested in court. Isiyaku Usman has not yet been arraigned. The child has not been named, in line with the need to protect a minor.

The combination of alleged sexual violence and theft of two inexpensive handsets has drawn particular local attention because it unfolded in daylight on a short walk between neighbouring houses.

Commissioner Aliyu’s instruction that the file move to specialist investigators is intended to keep the inquiry focused and less exposed to local pressure.

Whether that process produces a swift and fair trial will now be the measure of the command’s public assurance.
