Presiding judge Fabrice Rives of the Toulouse criminal court sentenced Abdelkader B., a 47-year-old father of three from the Toulouse area, to six months in prison after Abdelkader B. made a shock beheading threat against a 58-year-old primary teacher at École Clément Ader in Le Fauga, Haute-Garonne, on Friday 4 September.

The sentence was ordered to begin at once. Public prosecutor Marie Caumont had asked only for six months under electronic monitoring.

Judge Fabrice Rives went further, calling the words extremely disturbing and of a violence that could only recall events that have stayed in the minds of French people.

The row began with a nine-year-old boy in CM2. Staff moved the child into another classroom after insolent behaviour.

The teacher who received the boy told the child not to play the little caïd. After lessons, Abdelkader B. waited in the school car park, confronted the teacher beside her car, and followed the teacher into the building, repeating threats in front of the headteacher.

Witnesses told the court they heard a promise to cut off a head. Abdelkader B. accepted part of the account and said the sharpest line came later, outside the headteacher’s office: “If you were a man, I would have cut off your head.” Another member of staff reported a further warning that staff should not be surprised if the boy arrived with a knife.

The teacher has been granted official protection and is on sick leave. Lawyer Jocelyn Momasso-Momasso, acting for the education authority, said the client was traumatised and was staying with a son, too frightened to remain at home. “She told me: ‘I didn’t sign up for this.’” The same lawyer added that the teacher had pictured dying and wondered whether classroom work could continue.

Abdelkader B. apologised in the dock and said the seriousness of the remarks had not been grasped at the time. Defence counsel Majouba Saihi asked the court to treat the client as a father and not to weigh Muslim religious beliefs.

The court also imposed a citizenship course, a three-year ban on contact with the teacher or the school, and a transfer towards Seysses prison.

The language landed with particular force because France still lives with the murder of history teacher Samuel Paty, beheaded in 2020 after a lesson on free speech, and with the 2023 killing of French teacher Dominique Bernard in Arras.

Those crimes did not make every angry parent a terrorist. They did make a threat to behead a teacher a public wound, not a private outburst.

Education minister Édouard Geffray condemned the episode as being of extreme gravity, confirmed that a complaint had been filed, and said a July decree on violent or threatening parents would be applied so a child can be moved to another school when a family member puts staff at risk.

Rectorate officials said academic director Christian Mendivé would use that power in Haute-Garonne. Le Fauga mayor Jean-Marie Puig described a village of about 2,600 people stunned by what had been said at the school gate. Municipal police were posted outside the buildings.

Parents’ association president Céline Poilevilain wrote a letter of support and sent flowers. That small gesture sat beside a larger unease.

Teachers across France have spent six years working with the knowledge that a classroom remark, or a punishment, can travel home as grievance and return as menace.

The court did not claim that a parking-lot rage was the same as an Islamist assassination.

Judge Fabrice Rives treated the chosen words as a searing breach of the line that protects those who teach other people’s children. Six months in custody is short beside the fear left in one classroom and long beside the electronic tag the prosecution first sought.
