“I think God has seen how hard we worked, how much we suffered, how much pain we went through,” Alexander Zverev said during the trophy presentation. “I think 2026 is the outcome of all the years that happened before.”

Despite a spirited challenge from 23-year-old Ben Shelton, who aimed to become the first American man in 23 years to win a Grand Slam, Alexander Zverev maintained control for much of the contest.

The German’s precise serving and all-court authority proved decisive, particularly in the second-set tie-break where he surged into an early lead.

Shelton briefly shifted momentum in the third set, capitalising on rare errors to extend the match and ignite the home crowd.

However, Alexander Zverev responded with composure, breaking early in the fourth set and closing out the match with clinical efficiency.

A moment of quiet confusion followed match point, as the German admitted he had lost track of the score during the closing stages.

“I knew I broke him twice, but I thought it was 5-1 instead of 6-2,” Alexander Zverev said. “That helped me in a way, because I didn’t really get nervous serving out the match.”

For Shelton, the defeat marked the end of an impressive run that included victories over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz and compatriot Frances Tiafoe.

Reflecting on the final, Shelton acknowledged the narrow margins against an elite opponent.

“I made too many errors when I had the ball there on my strings,” Ben Shelton said. “Playing a guy like him, there are very few chances.”
