Former West Ham United goalkeeper Ludek Miklosko, the Czech international and club legend, has died at the age of 64, with the Championship side confirming the news following a prolonged illness.

Joining from Banik Ostrava in 1990, Ludek Miklosko spent seven influential years at Upton Park, making nearly 400 appearances between 1990 and 1997.
During that period, he played a crucial role in securing promotion to the English top flight in 1991 and again in 1993, establishing himself as a dependable presence in goal.
Supporters embraced Ludek Miklosko for both his performances and character, with his name continuing to echo around the stadium long after his departure.
His connection to the club endured, later returning to serve as a goalkeeping coach and mentor to younger players.
“It is with deep and profound sadness that West Ham United announces the passing of legendary former goalkeeper and coach, Ludek Miklosko,” the club said in a statement. “Rest in peace Ludek, our beloved, inspirational goalkeeper and gentle giant of a man.”
In December 2024, Ludek Miklosko publicly shared his decision to stop further cancer treatment, expressing a desire to focus on living a normal life.
The announcement drew widespread support from fans and the wider football community.
Tributes have continued to pour in, including from former club Banik Ostrava, which described Ludek Miklosko as an “outstanding goalkeeper and above all a great personality,” reflecting the esteem in which he was held both on and off the pitch.
His son, Martin Miklosko, acknowledged the profound loss while also recognising the encouragement his father received during his illness.
“We are heartbroken at his loss, but take huge comfort from the immense support he received from all of you, along with the knowledge that he is now at peace,” Martin Miklosko said. “Dad simply loved West Ham United, and especially hearing his name sung loud and proud at every game.”
West Ham United has confirmed plans to honour Ludek Miklosko during their League Cup fixture against Fulham, offering supporters an opportunity to celebrate his life and legacy.
Beyond club football, Ludek Miklosko represented Czechoslovakia before later featuring for the Czech Republic, contributing to the national team during a period of transition in European football.
