Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, alongside officials of the Nigerian Exchange Group (NGX), oversaw the strong market debut of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals Initial Public Offering, which recorded unprecedented investor demand within the first hour of trading.

The Dangote Refinery IPO subscriptions surged to approximately N1.5 trillion shortly after opening, reflecting intense appetite from both retail and institutional investors across Nigeria’s capital market.

The offer, which lists 4.1 billion ordinary shares at N525 each, is targeting about N2.15 trillion in total proceeds and is scheduled to close on 13 October 2026.

According to live data released by the NGX, more than 402,000 transactions worth over N1.47 trillion were recorded within the opening hour alone, positioning the offer among the most heavily subscribed public listings in the country’s financial history.

Aliko Dangote described the listing as a deliberate move to widen public participation rather than simply raise capital.

“The primary objective is to ensure Nigerians and other investors can participate in the growth of the refinery,” Aliko Dangote said during the “Facts Behind the Offer” presentation at the NGX headquarters.

The Dangote Refinery IPO subscriptions momentum has been supported by an extensive digital distribution framework, with approximately 55 electronic application channels deployed across banks, fintech platforms, mobile money operators, and investment firms.

This structure is aimed at expanding access and simplifying participation for retail investors.

The minimum entry threshold was set at just 10 shares, equivalent to N5,250 before charges, a decision widely viewed as a strategic effort to democratise ownership and attract millions of potential subscribers.

Market operators have described the initiative as one of the most inclusive public offers ever launched in Nigeria.

Secondary features of the offer include a greenshoe option of up to 30 percent, which allows for additional share issuance in the event of excess demand.

The structure is expected to help stabilise pricing while accommodating the overwhelming subscription levels already recorded.

Beyond capital mobilisation, Dangote also outlined long-term expansion plans for the refinery, including a projected capacity increase to 2.1 million barrels per day by 2030 and ambitions to reach a market valuation of $350 billion within four years.

He also announced plans for a new facility in Kenya, expected to begin operations within two years.

A notable feature of the offering is the decision to denominate dividends in US dollars, a move seen as offering investors a hedge against naira volatility.

Analysts suggest this could further enhance the appeal of the listing among foreign and diaspora investors.

The Dangote Refinery IPO subscriptions surge underscores growing confidence in Nigeria’s downstream oil sector and reflects the refinery’s strategic importance in Africa’s energy landscape.

As the offer continues toward its closing date, attention remains focused on whether demand will sustain its record-breaking pace.
