Dangote says a male heir is not his priority

Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group, said on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, that having a Dangote male heir was not his priority and that his three daughters could take the conglomerate forward.

He spoke on Arise News in the same run of interviews that covered petrol prices and the refinery share offer.

Asked if he could see a daughter in charge, he said: “I think, yes, I can see one of them. I’ve been watching all of them, so I can definitely see one of the three that can actually lead.” Halima, Fatima and Mariya Dangote already hold senior roles.

He said their work was chosen, not imposed. “They are very, very interested in the business. I’m not forcing them to come and be part of this business, no. They are very interested, and they enjoy it.”

Pressed on whether all three could rise, he answered: “All of them.” He added that education might take the firm further than he had managed. “One of them can be better than — I never expected to perform this much. But I’m sure they’re highly educated, so they will be more creative. So most likely, they might be even taking the company to the next level.”

On the Kano expectation of a son, he refused the script. “Sometimes you can pray for God to give you a son, but that son might be the one to bring down the name of the family. Sometimes when God doesn’t give you something, don’t push. I don’t think a son would have done something better than these three daughters that I have. That one, I think, you know, it’s not my priority.” He repeated that even a son would not, in his view, have outdone the three.

He then widened the plan beyond family. “I want this company to be run professionally. I want to have the highest level of governance.” He pointed to Microsoft and Apple as firms that outlived founders and said he wanted structures that made it “very difficult for any family member to come and destroy anything.”

The legacy he named was industrial, not dynastic. “What I want to leave as a legacy is to industrialise Africa. I cannot do it alone, but I’m 100% sure that in the next two or three years, other Africans will join.”

Africa’s richest man has long been asked the heir question. Naming daughters while promising professional boards is a public answer to that drum. It is not a signed succession paper.

Who actually sits in the chair will be settled by shareholding, governance rules and time, including the refinery’s new public investors. What Tuesday put on record is simpler. He will not treat a missing son as a hole in the house.
