Sandra Omoruyi, a 16-year-old Nigerian chess player and World Rapid Amateur Chess Champion, Abuja, Nigeria, on September 16, 2026, has said her ambitions in chess have grown significantly following her breakthrough victory at the World Rapid Amateur Chess Championship held in the Nigerian capital in August 2026.

Sandra Omoruyi, who emerged as one of Nigeria’s most promising young talents, said the triumph has reshaped her confidence and long-term goals, moving her focus from national recognition to global competitiveness and a future Grandmaster title pursuit.

Reflecting on her journey, Sandra Omoruyi described chess as a family-driven passion that began at home, where her father first introduced her to the game before she progressed under multiple coaches, including Edward Eguavoe Evbuomwan, whom she credits as a major influence in her development.

“I come from a chess family where my dad, mum and siblings all play chess, so my dad was my first coach,” Omoruyi said. “After winning MVP at the Youth Games, I realised I could actually compete at the highest level.”

The young champion also acknowledged the demanding nature of her preparation, revealing that her training sometimes stretches between 10 to 16 hours daily depending on competition schedules, combining tactical drills, engine-based analysis and rapid practice games with peers.

Her breakthrough at the Abuja championship did not come without difficulty, as she recalled losing her first three blitz games before staging a strong comeback that ultimately defined her tournament resilience.

“I lost my first three games and I started asking myself if I had made a mistake coming,” Omoruyi said. “Then I reset, focused on one game at a time, and started winning. That moment taught me resilience is everything in chess.”

The World Rapid Amateur Chess Championship victory, however, marked a turning point in her career, with Omoruyi describing the moment she clinched the title as emotional and deeply fulfilling.

“It felt surreal. The first thing I did was thank God. I thought about my family, my coach and everyone who believed in me,” she said. “All the sacrifices made sense in that moment.”

Beyond chess, Omoruyi is also pursuing academic aspirations in medicine, stating that her long-term ambition includes becoming a medical doctor while continuing to represent Nigeria at the highest levels of chess, including the Chess Olympiad.

Analysts within Nigeria’s chess community have described her emergence as part of a growing wave of young talent benefiting from structured coaching and increased visibility for the sport in the country.

With her recent success, Omoruyi now sets her sights on achieving title norms and ultimately becoming a Grandmaster, a milestone she believes is achievable through discipline, resilience and continued support.

“I want to inspire more young girls to play chess,” she said. “It doesn’t matter where you start from. You can reach the top.”
