Former First Lady Aisha Buhari visited former Vice-President and African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar at his residence in Abuja on Wednesday, 16 September 2026, in a closely watched meeting that comes as political activity gathers pace ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
Atiku disclosed the meeting in a statement shared on social media, describing the encounter as “warm and deeply appreciated”.

Neither Aisha Buhari nor Atiku Abubakar publicly disclosed the specific purpose of the Abuja visit or the details of their private discussion.
“Today, I was delighted to receive former First Lady, H.E. Aisha Buhari. Her visit was warm and deeply appreciated,” Atiku Abubakar wrote.
The meeting nevertheless carried considerable public interest because Aisha Buhari is the widow of former President Muhammadu Buhari, while Atiku Abubakar is preparing to contest the 2027 presidential election under the ADC.
The ADC has formally submitted Atiku Abubakar’s name as its presidential candidate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, alongside former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi as the party’s vice-presidential candidate.
Against that political backdrop, Atiku Abubakar used the occasion to focus his public remarks on the economic pressures facing Nigerian households rather than disclose details of his conversation with Aisha Buhari.
He said families across the country were being stretched by the rising cost of food, transport, education, healthcare and other basic necessities.
“Nigerians deserve an economy that rewards hard work, restores opportunity and allows every family to live with dignity and hope,” Atiku Abubakar said.
He framed the challenge as a broader responsibility for political actors seeking to shape Nigeria’s future, saying the welfare, dignity and future of citizens should remain at the centre of public leadership.
The former Vice-President concluded with a call to reduce the pressure on households and restore confidence, saying: “We must ease the burden, restore hope and Make Nigeria Affordable Again.”
Aisha Buhari was accompanied during the Abuja visit by one of her daughters and associates, according to reports.
The visit was not publicly presented by either party as a political endorsement or formal alliance.
The encounter also follows an earlier meeting between Aisha Buhari and Atiku Abubakar in Saudi Arabia in February 2026.
During that visit, Atiku Abubakar said he hosted Aisha Buhari, her daughter Hanan and other members of the Buhari family while both families were in the Kingdom for Umrah.
The earlier meeting was described in contemporaneous reports as a private and cordial encounter centred on religious observance.
The latest meeting takes place more than a year after Muhammadu Buhari died in London on 13 July 2025, aged 82.
The former president, who served as Nigeria’s elected president from 2015 to 2023, was buried in Daura, Katsina State, two days later.
Following the burial, Aisha Buhari and members of the Buhari family relocated from Daura to the former president’s residence in Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna.
The family returned to Kaduna on 27 July 2025, 12 days after Muhammadu Buhari’s burial.
The political environment surrounding the latest encounter is also more active than it was during the Saudi Arabia meeting.
Atiku Abubakar’s emergence as the ADC presidential candidate has been followed by efforts to consolidate the party’s 2027 campaign, while wider opposition discussions about possible cooperation have continued.
In August, an ADC spokesman said the party was prepared to contest independently after proposed opposition coalition arrangements failed to materialise.
Atiku Abubakar’s meeting with Aisha Buhari therefore arrives at a significant moment in Nigeria’s political calendar, but the available public evidence does not establish that the visit represents a political agreement, endorsement or change of allegiance.
For now, the clearest public message from the encounter has come from Atiku Abubakar, who chose to connect the occasion with the everyday pressures confronting Nigerian families and the need for political leaders to address those concerns.
The quiet nature of the meeting, alongside the absence of a publicly stated agenda, leaves its wider political meaning open to interpretation.

What is confirmed is that two prominent figures from Nigeria’s recent political history met in Abuja, with Atiku Abubakar subsequently using the occasion to make a renewed appeal for an economy in which families can live with greater dignity and security.
