The Airline Operators of Nigeria and Air Peace chief executive Allen Onyema said Nigerian carriers were under fresh cost pressure on 18 September 2026 after Jet A1 aviation fuel prices rose by about 20 per cent, with some airport quotes reaching N2,150 per litre.
Domestic airlines are considering another tariff increase. The report linked the rise to disruption in global oil supply, including tension between the United States and Iran and attacks on Saudi facilities by Iran-backed Houthi fighters.

A survey of Nigerian airports found wide gaps in pump prices. In Lagos, Jet A1 sold between N1,719 and N2,100 per litre, with only two marketers averaging about N1,750.
In Abuja, one supplier charged N1,769 and another N1,844, while other quotes ran from N1,190 to N2,150. In Kano, the lowest recorded price was N1,794, with others between N1,851 and N2,047.
Port Harcourt had five suppliers. The cheapest price there was N1,764 per litre, with other marketers at N1,904 to N2,109.
The survey also listed N2,047 in Anambra, N1,990 in Benin, N1,990 in Enugu, N2,120 in Ilorin and N2,138 in Sokoto.
Allen Onyema, who is also vice-president of the Airline Operators of Nigeria, said local airlines were especially exposed because they already operate on thin margins.
The association has sought a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on taxes, charges and other operating costs.
Allen Onyema said a more balanced tax and charges regime could ease pressure on carriers, aviation agencies and passengers.

Fuel costs have risen for domestic and international operators since the first quarter of the year. No airline named a new fare figure in the report.
