Rotaract District 9112 takes fire safety campaign through Lagos Island communities, combining extinguisher distribution with emergency response education, medical outreach and community engagement.
Rotaractors in District 9112 have taken fire prevention directly to traders and shop owners on Lagos Island, distributing fire extinguishers and promoting emergency preparedness during the Eko For Show – Great Trek 2026.
The two-day community initiative, held on September 25 and 26, combined a sensitisation trek with fire safety education, emergency response training, medical outreach, first aid and disaster preparedness activities.
Participants moved through key parts of Lagos Island, beginning from Hawley Street and proceeding through Lewis, Bamgbose, Tinubu, Martin’s and UBA before reaching Apongbon.
Beyond walking the route, the Rotaractors engaged communities on the importance of being prepared for fire emergencies, particularly within markets and other densely populated commercial areas where an outbreak can quickly threaten lives, goods and property.
Central to the initiative was a campaign to provide 300 fire extinguishers to shop owners across Lagos Island markets, giving beneficiaries access to basic firefighting equipment that could help contain small fires before they escalate.
The initiative attracted support from Rotary clubs, organisations and other partners, with the Rotary Club of Ikoyi contributing ₦500,000 towards the fire extinguisher campaign.
The contribution supported 11 fire extinguishers and earned the club recognition by the organisers as a Safety Vanguard Club.
Other sponsorship categories established by the organisers allowed clubs and partners to fund different numbers of extinguishers towards the wider 300-unit target.
Eko For Show 2026 also featured a mega medical outreach, fire safety sensitisation and emergency response training, first aid and disaster preparedness programmes, fitness activities, networking and community engagement.
Following the programme, the Eko For Show Committee thanked sponsors, partners, supporting Rotary clubs, registered participants, Rotaractors, Rotarians and volunteers for contributing to the success of the initiative.
The committee said their resources, goodwill and commitment helped advance its goal of creating safer and better-prepared communities across Lagos Island.
“To our partners and sponsors, thank you for believing in the vision and standing with us throughout this journey,” the committee said.
It also acknowledged participants whose presence and energy helped turn the campaign from a planned trek into a practical community intervention.
Through the combination of public sensitisation and the distribution of firefighting equipment, the Eko For Show Trek sought to leave something more enduring than the footprints of its participants — putting basic fire-response tools into the hands of Lagos Island shop owners who may need them when every second counts.
