CBN policy buffers stabilise Naira as reserves hit $55.25bn

Nigeria’s rising $55.25bn reserves and policy measures help steady FX market despite rate cut and shifting investor sentiment

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, in Abuja, Nigeria, maintained a relatively stable naira-dollar market outlook as rising external reserves, targeted liquidity management and sustained monetary policy buffers continued to support foreign exchange stability across official and parallel markets.

The CBN naira-dollar outlook stability has been reinforced by a combination of stronger gross external reserves, which recently climbed to $55.25 billion, and steady inflows from crude oil earnings, diaspora remittances and portfolio investments, according to market data and financial analyses drawn from Nairametrics and central bank disclosures.

Official data shows the naira has traded within a narrow band of N1,327 to N1,330 per dollar on the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM), even after the Monetary Policy Committee reduced the Monetary Policy Rate by 350 basis points from 26.5% to 23%, signalling a cautious shift toward growth support without destabilising currency fundamentals.

In the parallel market, the naira opened at approximately N1,385 per dollar, keeping the spread between official and street rates relatively contained compared to previous volatility cycles.

Analysts describe this convergence as a sign of improved market confidence and more effective liquidity management.

A senior monetary policy official familiar with the committee’s stance noted that the central bank remains focused on safeguarding macroeconomic stability.

The official stated, “Our priority is to ensure that liquidity conditions support both price stability and exchange rate resilience while allowing the economy to adjust to evolving global conditions.”

The CBN naira-dollar outlook stability has also been supported by active use of Open Market Operations (OMO) bills and other liquidity tools designed to manage excess naira liquidity and reduce speculative pressure in the foreign exchange market.

Despite these gains, market participants continue to highlight underlying vulnerabilities, particularly reduced FX market turnover and persistent demand for foreign currency from import-dependent sectors, including energy and manufacturing.

A financial analyst quoted in recent market commentary observed that “while reserves provide a crucial buffer, sustained stability will depend on maintaining strong export earnings and keeping investor appetite for naira assets competitive.”

Nigeria’s external reserve position, now at $55.25 billion, has been described by economists as a significant cushion capable of absorbing short-term shocks.

The reserves are supported by improved oil receipts, steady capital inflows and ongoing fiscal adjustments aimed at strengthening external liquidity.

However, the policy environment is not without risks.

The recent reduction in interest rates has triggered concerns that lower yields on fixed-income instruments such as Treasury Bills and OMO bills could reduce foreign portfolio investor participation over time, potentially affecting inflow dynamics.

Inflation, which eased to 15.39 percent in August, has provided some policy breathing room, but economists warn that sustaining disinflation will require continued coordination between monetary tightening, fiscal discipline and structural reforms in the energy and export sectors.

Market observers also point to Nigeria’s crude oil production levels, currently targeted above 2 million barrels per day, as a critical determinant of future FX stability, given its direct impact on dollar inflows.

In the broader context, the central bank’s mix of policy easing and reserve accumulation reflects a balancing act between stimulating economic growth and maintaining currency resilience, a strategy that continues to shape investor sentiment in Africa’s largest economy.
