Niger State IED bridge explosion kills at least eight in Borgu LGA as suspected terrorists target key Luma Road link route

At least eight persons were killed on Monday, 2026, in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State after an improvised explosive device detonated along Luma Road, destroying a vital bridge and striking a passing vehicle in what authorities believe was a targeted attack by suspected terrorists.

The Niger State IED bridge explosion occurred in the early hours of the day when a vehicle travelling between Nuku and Woro reportedly ran over the explosive device, triggering a powerful blast that instantly killed all occupants, including the driver.

The explosion also caused extensive damage to the bridge linking Luma, Babana and Agwara communities, a critical transport route used by residents, traders and commuters heading towards the Babana border market.

Security sources said the attack appeared to be part of a repeated pattern of sabotage in the area, as the same group was previously suspected of targeting the bridge to disrupt movement and economic activity within the region.

The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that the device was detonated by suspected terrorists operating from nearby forest areas.

The command added that the attack was reported later in the morning, prompting an immediate response from security operatives.

Spokesperson for the command, Wasiu Abiodun, said a clearance operation has been launched in the affected axis, with intensified surveillance aimed at preventing further attacks and securing surrounding communities.

Residents have expressed growing concern over repeated security breaches in the area, describing the destruction of the bridge as a major setback for movement and local commerce.

Authorities say monitoring and tactical operations will continue as efforts intensify to restore safety and reopen the affected route.
