Premier league demands swift decision in Man City investigation

The English Premier League, in London, on October 1, 2026, is pushing for a swift resolution of the Man City Financial Ruling, with senior football figures indicating that the long-running case involving Manchester City’s alleged breaches of financial regulations should be concluded before the end of the current season.

The Man City Financial Ruling follows findings that the club breached Premier League financial rules between the 2009–10 and 2017–18 seasons, including allegations of inflating revenue by more than £900 million through sponsorship arrangements.

Manchester City have strongly denied the allegations and are expected to appeal the decision, setting the stage for what could be one of the most consequential regulatory battles in English football history.

Sources within the league told BBC Sport that there is growing consensus that the process, which has already spanned three years since the initial charges, should not extend beyond the current campaign.

One senior club official said resolving the matter quickly would serve the interests of the league, clubs and supporters, particularly given the uncertainty surrounding potential sanctions and their impact on competition outcomes.

“There is no reason why the process cannot be completed this season,” a football source said, expressing confidence that any appeal could be handled within a compressed timeframe.

The final determination on sanctions rests with an independent commission, which will consider submissions from both the Premier League and Manchester City before delivering a verdict.

Possible outcomes could have far-reaching implications, especially if Manchester City remain in contention for major honours.

The urgency around the Man City Financial Ruling is partly driven by concerns over sporting integrity, with stakeholders wary of a scenario in which the club completes another season without clarity on potential punishment.

Premier League rules state that appeals are typically concluded within 12 weeks, with decisions expected within 30 days after proceedings end. However, it remains uncertain whether those timelines will apply directly in this complex case.

Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano has previously suggested that the process could extend further, while the club retains the option of challenging procedural aspects in the High Court, although not at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The case has also drawn in external stakeholders, with Etihad Airways, one of Manchester City’s key sponsors, rejecting any suggestion of involvement in improper arrangements and raising concerns about reputational impact.

The airline indicated it is considering legal options over how the findings were presented.

The Premier League has maintained that it wants the case resolved “as soon as possible,” reflecting mounting pressure to deliver clarity in a dispute that has become a defining test of financial governance in modern football.

As the season progresses, the outcome of the Man City Financial Ruling is expected to shape not only the club’s immediate future but also broader regulatory standards across the sport.
