Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has declared that “Instagram is for girls” while weighing in on a viral discussion about social-media habits.
Musk made the remark on X on May 15, 2026, in response to a post discussing how people’s online behaviour can change through different stages of life. The discussion referenced activities including posting selfies, sharing frequent Instagram Stories and uploading pictures of food.
“Lmao. Instagram is for girls,” Musk wrote.
The comment quickly attracted attention online, with users debating the billionaire’s characterisation of the Meta-owned platform.
Musk followed up with another remark about men who share their Instagram accounts with him.
“Sometimes grown men send me their Instagram profiles and I’m like are you transitioning or what?” he wrote.
The comments generated criticism from some social-media users, with several accusing Musk of making sexist remarks. Others treated the comments as another example of his frequent provocative posts about rival social-media platforms.
Musk has frequently criticised Meta-owned platforms while promoting X, the social-media company formerly known as Twitter that he acquired in 2022.
The Instagram remark also fits into Musk’s broader public rivalry with Meta and its chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, although the immediate post was made in response to a discussion about users’ social-media habits.
