First City Monument Bank (FCMB) and the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation (TCF) have provided free eye care to more than 400,000 Nigerians through their Priceless Gift of Sight programme.

Launched in 2009, the initiative offers eye tests, optical services, surgeries and disease management to people who might otherwise struggle to access treatment.

By July 2024, the programme had reached over 400,000 beneficiaries across the country.

A child who cannot read, a trader who struggles to recognise a customer, and an older person who needs help finding their way home illustrate the everyday impact of vision loss. When sight becomes impaired, learning, earning a living and living independently also become harder.

Sometimes an eye test, a pair of glasses or prompt treatment can make the difference. The challenge remains making that care available and sustainable.

To mark World Sight Day last week, FCMB organised a roundtable with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, through the National Eye, Ear and Sensory Functions Health Programme, and TCF.

Discussions focused on strengthening partnerships and securing sustainable funding so that more people can access care and complete their treatment.

Officials noted that eye tests must lead to actual treatment, clinics need skilled personnel and functioning equipment, and patients require support to finish their care.

After more than 15 years of collaboration, FCMB and TCF say their goal remains practical: helping more people see a lesson, serve a customer or find their way home.
