Senegal international Nicolas Jackson scored twice for Aston Villa in a memorable 2-1 Premier League victory over Manchester City at Villa Park, Birmingham, on Saturday, 24 October 2026, ending the visitors’ perfect start to the league season and taking his tally since joining Villa from Chelsea to seven goals in 11 appearances across competitions.

Jackson struck in the sixth minute and again on the hour, with Erling Haaland briefly restoring parity for Manchester City in the 52nd minute.

The result handed Villa a significant victory against the league leaders and underlined Jackson’s growing influence in Unai Emery’s attack.

The Senegal forward opened the scoring with a composed finish into the roof of the net after John McGinn supplied the pass.

The early breakthrough gave Villa a platform against a City side that had won its opening seven Premier League matches.

Haaland brought City level shortly after half-time, raising hopes that the visitors could preserve their winning run. Jackson, however, had other ideas.

After teenage Senegal international Ibrahim Mbaye entered the match, the youngster helped create the decisive opportunity.

Jackson received the return pass and squeezed his shot beyond goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to restore Villa’s lead.

City pressed for another equaliser, but Villa held firm to secure a victory that carried added significance for a side seeking consistency in the league.

Jackson’s movement, determination and finishing proved decisive in a contest where the visitors created several opportunities of their own.

Villa manager Unai Emery was delighted with his side’s performance, describing the contest as “What a match” after the final whistle.

The result also offered encouragement to supporters following a difficult opening to the campaign.

The victory ended Manchester City’s seven-match winning start and left the club level on points with defending champions Arsenal, with goal difference separating the two sides at the top of the table after eight matches.

Jackson was not the only African player to attract attention over the weekend, with several internationals making important contributions across Europe’s leading domestic competitions.

In England, Burkina Faso winger Dango Ouattara scored his first goal of the season to earn Brentford a 1-1 draw away to Hull City on Sunday.

Hull had taken the lead through Oli McBurnie’s first-half penalty before Ouattara equalised in the 63rd minute, finishing after Igor Thiago helped create the opportunity.

The point offered Brentford some relief, although the club remained without a victory in its previous three matches, according to the supplied match roundup.

Ouattara’s contribution nevertheless demonstrated the value of individual quality in a tightly contested encounter.

In Spain, Ghana international Iñaki Williams scored as Athletic Club defeated Getafe 4-0 at San Mamés on Sunday.

Williams found the net in the 35th minute, finishing a counter-attacking move after his younger brother, Nico Williams, had threatened to score.

The emphatic victory was built on an effective attacking display, with Álex Berenguer, Aitor Paredes and Yuri Berchiche also finding the net.

For Iñaki, the goal added a personal highlight to a convincing team performance in front of the home supporters.

In Italy, Cameroon midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa was among the African players highlighted for his contribution to Napoli’s reported 3-3 draw with Roma.

The supplied match account described his bicycle kick as a standout moment after Roma failed to clear a free-kick.

In Germany, Guinea international Serhou Guirassy posed a persistent threat for Borussia Dortmund against Eintracht Frankfurt, despite failing to score in the 1-0 victory.

Guirassy went close with an attempted chip in the first half, headed against the crossbar after the interval and later sent a cross narrowly wide.

Dortmund ultimately secured the points through Maximilian Beier’s 80th-minute goal, rather than Guirassy’s finishing.

The Guinea forward’s performance nevertheless showed how his movement and aerial presence continued to trouble opposing defences.

In France, Ivory Coast forward Elye Wahi and Morocco international Sofiane Diop were reported to have scored in Nice’s 2-1 comeback victory over Brest.

Wahi reportedly equalised shortly after the hour mark before Diop delivered the decisive goal in the 83rd minute, punishing a defensive error.

Their contributions provided a reminder that African players continue to shape results across Europe, not only through headline-grabbing braces but also through timely goals that turn difficult matches in their teams’ favour.

Jackson’s performance, however, stood out for its decisive impact against one of the Premier League’s strongest sides.

Scoring twice against City offered a significant boost to his confidence and strengthened the impression that he is becoming an increasingly influential figure in Villa’s attack.

For African football, the weekend’s performances provided another encouraging snapshot of the continent’s representation across elite European competitions.

From Jackson’s match-winning display in England to Williams’ contribution in Spain and the efforts of other internationals across the continent, the results reflected the varied ways African talent continues to influence club football.

Villa’s victory will be remembered chiefly for Jackson’s clinical finishing and the end of City’s winning start.

Across the wider European landscape, the weekend also belonged to players whose contributions helped secure valuable points, restore momentum and give supporters fresh reasons for optimism.
