Portfolio inflows into Nigeria rose to $7.09 billion in the second quarter of 2026, from $6.03 billion in the first quarter, representing an increase of about 18 per cent.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) disclosed this in its Q2 2026 Economic Report, attributing the rise mainly to higher inflows into long-term general government debt securities.

According to the report, the $1.06 billion increase reflected stronger foreign investor interest in Nigerian government debt instruments during the period.

The rise in portfolio inflows contributed to an increase in Nigeria’s financial liabilities, which climbed to $10.84 billion in Q2 from $8.36 billion in the preceding quarter.

Direct investment liabilities also increased to $1.15 billion from $1.03 billion, driven by higher reinvested earnings.

Other investment liabilities more than doubled to $2.75 billion from $1.36 billion, reflecting higher loan drawdowns by government and other sectors, alongside increased currency and deposit liabilities of deposit-taking corporations.

Portfolio investment inflows were approximately six times the size of direct investment liabilities in the quarter and accounted for about 65 per cent of net liabilities incurred.
