African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has alleged that he was attacked by about 20 suspected thugs in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, Sowore said the assailants descended on him while he was at a restaurant meeting some of his supporters.
“They beat me like a criminal. They came from nowhere, about 20 of them, armed with sticks and bottles. They said they will kill me if I come to Ekiti again,” he said.
Sowore stated that he sustained injuries to his face and other parts of his body and was taken to a hospital for treatment. He claimed the incident was captured by CCTV cameras but alleged that security agents had taken possession of the footage.
The Ekiti State Police Command confirmed that an incident involving Sowore occurred at a restaurant in the Dalimore area of Ado-Ekiti. Police said operatives responded to a distress call, intervened and took him to the Police Hospital for treatment of what they described as minor injuries.
The command denied reports that Sowore was kidnapped, describing the incident as an altercation, and said a discreet investigation had been ordered.
