Google launches free offline AI training for Nigerians

thenacre-campaign

Google has launched a free, offline-accessible digital learning platform for Nigerians and other Africans, with its Managing Director for Africa, Alex Okosi, and Communications and Public Relations Manager for West Africa, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, announcing the initiative on Monday, November 2, 2026, as part of the company’s broader effort to expand access to artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital skills across the continent.

Known as Skilling Africa with Google, the initiative aims to equip three million people across Africa with digital and AI skills by 2030, with an initial target of graduating 250,000 learners by the end of 2026.

The platform, launched across Africa, is designed to address some of the barriers limiting access to digital education, particularly high mobile data costs, unreliable internet connectivity and limited access to suitable devices.

According to Google, the learning hub allows users to download lessons while connected to Wi-Fi and complete the training later without an active internet connection or additional mobile data expenses.

Explaining the motivation behind the initiative, Okosi said: “Africa has a significant opportunity to shape the future of AI, but unlocking that opportunity will require people with the skills to build, use and innovate with these technologies.”

He added that bringing Google’s existing training programmes together would make digital and AI education more accessible to people across the continent.

The platform consolidates more than 15 Google training initiatives into a central learning hub, offering courses and learning pathways for students, job seekers, entrepreneurs and technology professionals.

Its training areas include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analytics, digital marketing, entrepreneurship and small business development.

Among the featured programmes is Google Career Certificates, which provides professional training in areas such as data analytics, IT support and cybersecurity.

The programme is designed to help learners develop practical skills relevant to employment opportunities in the digital economy.

The platform also incorporates Hustle Academy, Google’s business education initiative for small and medium-sized enterprises, offering entrepreneurs practical resources to strengthen business operations, improve resilience and support growth.

For developers and technology professionals, Google Cloud Skills provides technical learning opportunities focused on cloud computing and infrastructure, helping participants strengthen their capabilities in building and managing digital solutions.

Another notable feature is SCOUT, an AI-powered study companion whose full name is Smart Companion for Online Understanding and Training.

The tool is designed to support learners by answering questions, explaining unfamiliar concepts, suggesting learning pathways and helping users organise their study schedules around individual goals.

Learners can also monitor their progress through interactive skill trees, maintain learning streaks and earn verifiable digital badges upon completing training modules.

These badges can be shared with prospective employers and clients as evidence of acquired competencies.

Accessibility is a central part of the platform’s design.

Google said the learning hub works on entry-level smartphones and desktop computers, loads across different network conditions and does not require users to download a separate application.

The platform uses Google Single Sign-On, allowing learners to access the available programmes through their Google accounts without complicated registration procedures.

Google is also working to expand language accessibility across the continent.

The platform currently supports English, Swahili and Arabic, with additional African languages, including Hausa, expected to broaden participation among people who prefer learning in local languages.

The initiative builds on Google’s previous digital skills development programmes, through which more than seven million young Africans have received foundational digital training.

The company’s latest move also comes amid growing concerns about the shortage of specialised technology talent across Africa.

In its announcement, Google estimated that more than 90 per cent of companies across the region faced a critical shortage of AI-ready professionals, despite growing interest in digital innovation and the opportunities emerging from artificial intelligence.

The company also highlighted an estimated $2.9 trillion AI-driven economic opportunity for Africa, noting that the continent’s ability to benefit from this growth would depend partly on developing a workforce capable of building, adopting and applying emerging technologies.

For Nigeria, where the cost of internet access and uneven connectivity can restrict participation in online learning, the offline feature could make digital education more accessible to students, graduates, entrepreneurs and aspiring technology professionals.

However, access to training alone does not guarantee employment or business success.

Learners will still need opportunities to gain practical experience, demonstrate their competencies and connect their acquired skills to real workplace and business needs.

Google’s three-million-person target therefore represents more than a training commitment.

It also highlights the growing importance of digital literacy and technical capacity in preparing African economies for an increasingly AI-driven global marketplace.

As artificial intelligence continues to reshape industries and professional opportunities, the initiative offers Nigerians another opportunity to develop relevant digital capabilities without the burden of maintaining a constant internet connection.
