Tinubu backs Flamingos to win historic U-17 World Cup

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, to complete their historic campaign by defeating Japan in the final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Rabat, Morocco, on Saturday, November 7, following their impressive 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-finals.

The President’s message, issued through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in Abuja on Thursday, November 5, was accompanied by a similar show of support from Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, who praised the team’s determination and urged the players to remain focused on securing the title.

Tinubu described the Flamingos’ qualification as a remarkable achievement, noting that their performance had brought immense pride and joy to Nigerians at home and abroad.

He encouraged the players to approach the final with the same determination that had carried them through the tournament, expressing confidence in their ability to claim the trophy.

“I encourage you to approach the final with the same fighting spirit and belief that have brought you this far. I have confidence in your ability to make history by winning the coveted world title,” the President said.

He also called on Nigerians to support the young players, describing them as ambassadors whose achievements could inspire more girls to pursue their ambitions in sport.

“Once again, Nigeria is proud of you. Go for the trophy, Flamingos!” he added.

The presidential encouragement follows Nigeria’s commanding performance against Brazil at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat on Wednesday, November 4, when the Flamingos secured their first-ever appearance in the final of the competition.

After a goalless first half, Queen Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, converting a pass from Oluwakemi Adegubyi to give Nigeria the advantage.

Joseph subsequently turned provider, setting up Awawu Bashiru for the second goal in the 71st minute. Bashiru completed her brace nine minutes later, converting Oluebube Umejiaku’s delivery to put Nigeria firmly in control at 3-0.

Brazil managed a late consolation through Greise Kelly in the 89th minute, with Yasmin Queiroz providing the assist.

However, the late response did little to derail Nigeria’s progress as the Flamingos held on for an emphatic victory.

The result marked a significant milestone for the Nigerian side, surpassing its previous best performance in the competition.

The Flamingos finished third at the 2022 edition in India after defeating Germany in the bronze-medal match.

Their journey in Morocco has also demonstrated considerable resilience.

Following an opening 2-1 defeat to Poland, the team recovered with victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea before progressing through the knockout stages.

Nigeria defeated Mexico 2-1 in the round of 16 and edged Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals, with captain Azeezat Oduntan scoring a decisive late penalty.

Head coach Akeem Busari previously described reaching the semi-finals as a dream come true, emphasising the players’ determination to make the country proud.

Meanwhile, Okpebholo commended the squad for its tactical discipline, teamwork and competitive spirit, particularly recognising Joseph and Bashiru for their contributions against Brazil.

The governor also acknowledged the efforts of the technical crew and assured the players of the continued support of Nigerians, especially residents of Edo State, as they pursue the country’s first title at this level.

Japan, however, presents a formidable challenge.

The Asian side secured its place in the final after a dramatic semi-final encounter against defending champions North Korea on Wednesday.

Japan recovered from a 52nd-minute deficit through a late own goal in stoppage time before winning 4-1 on penalties.

The victory marked the country’s return to the final for the first time since 2016. Japan previously won the competition in 2014.

The final is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, at 18:30 local time at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, following a change to the original venue arrangements announced by FIFA.

For the Flamingos, the encounter represents an opportunity to turn an already historic campaign into a landmark achievement for Nigerian women’s football.

A victory would deliver Nigeria its first FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title and establish the young squad among the competition’s champions.
