The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has announced the promotion, upgrading and conversion of 6,043 officers across its senior and junior cadres, in an exercise aimed at improving staff morale, strengthening career development and enhancing operational efficiency.
The approvals, granted by the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), cover officers across various ranks, including promotions to senior management positions and the elevation of eligible personnel into the Superintendent and Inspectorate cadres.

In a statement issued on Thursday, November 5, 2026, and signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Corrections, JN Osuji, the NCoS said 4,760 senior officers benefited from promotions and upgrading, while 1,283 junior officers received promotions, upgrading and conversion.
The senior cadre exercise covers promotions from Inspector of Corrections to Assistant Superintendent of Corrections II, through to Assistant Controller-General of Corrections. It also includes the upgrading of 159 eligible officers to the Superintendent Cadre.
For the junior cadre, the exercise covers promotions from Correctional Assistant III to Inspector of Corrections. Another 129 officers were upgraded to the Inspectorate Cadre, while 743 Chief Correctional Assistants were converted to Inspectors of Corrections.
The approvals were communicated through official letters from the CDCFIB dated October 26, November 2 and November 4, 2026.
Reacting to the development, the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, expressed appreciation to the Minister of Interior and Chairman of the CDCFIB, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, for his leadership and support for the welfare and career advancement of personnel.
Nwakuche said the approval reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to staff motivation, institutional development and improved service delivery across the correctional system.
He also commended the board for approving the exercise, noting that career advancement opportunities would encourage officers to remain dedicated to their responsibilities.
Congratulating the beneficiaries, the Controller-General urged them to regard their new positions as a call to greater responsibility, professionalism and integrity.
He further charged the promoted officers to uphold discipline and demonstrate stronger commitment to their duties, stressing the importance of maintaining high standards in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The latest exercise follows a wider promotion approval announced by the CDCFIB in October 2026, when the board approved the advancement of 27,624 personnel across the four paramilitary agencies under its supervision. The Nigerian Correctional Service accounted for 4,601 officers in that initial breakdown.
The new NCoS announcement provides a separate breakdown of 6,043 beneficiaries, including cadre upgrades and conversions. The figures should therefore be understood in the context of the specific approvals communicated in the November announcement, rather than added automatically to the earlier total.
In December 2025, the Service also announced the promotion of 16,582 officers across its senior and junior cadres, alongside additional upgrades and conversions for eligible personnel.
The Nigerian Correctional Service is responsible for the safe custody, reformation, rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders, as well as the implementation of non-custodial measures.
The Service said it remained committed to developing a professional, disciplined and motivated workforce capable of delivering these responsibilities effectively.

The latest promotion and upgrading exercise is expected to provide further career incentives for personnel, while placing greater expectations on beneficiaries to demonstrate professionalism, accountability and dedication to public service.
