The federal government has confirmed the fears of many health experts around the world about the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Boss Mustapha, the secretary to the government of the federation and the chairman of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, on Tuesday, November 3, noted that there will be a massive import of the virus into the country from passengers, Freelanews reports.

Mustapha blamed this on some Nigerians who refused to take the necessary tests upon their arrival in the country, noting that from official statistics, only one in three persons subject themselves to routine checkup.

The SGF added that the elections in Edo and Ondo, as well as the recent EndSARS protests around the country, escalated the infections.

He went on:

“The PTF is highlighting these issues repeatedly because we remain at risk of importation, having opened our airspace and massive spread as a result of the protests. The next week or two remain critical.

Mustapha stated that sanctions had been announced by the PTF as a consequence of any infraction and it has been observed that many are not complying.

“Having observed serious non-compliance to the level of 65%, the need has arisen to activate the sanctions, including the suspension of the passports of such defaulting individuals for a period of six months minimum.”

Earlier, reports emerged that some states in Nigeria might witness a more devastating second wave of the coronavirus disease.

The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) warned that the non-compliance to COVID-19 health guidelines could spike the second wave in Adamawa and other states in the country.

Fahad Mohammed, the technical adviser in the implementation of NCDC’s action plan gave the warning in Adamawa state.

He sounded the warning during the sensitisation of officials of the Nigerian police and other paramilitary agencies in Yola.
