A 1-year-old Dallas boy was struck and killed in a targeted shooting, prompting the city’s fed-up top cop to beg, “This s–t has to stop.”
The child, identified as Rory Norman, was just shy of turning 2 when he was fatally shot around 3:30 a.m. Sunday at a home in the Bonton neighborhood, news station WFAA reported.
“I don’t know what that looks like to anyone else, but I know it’s something you never want to see, not only as a mother, but a police chief,” an emotional Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall told reporters. “It happened on my watch. And I am angry. And this s–t has to stop in this city.”
The child’s 20-year-old uncle, who was home from college, was brought to a local hospital with multiple gunshot wounds, officials said.
The uncle told authorities an unknown person had shot several rounds at his home, striking him and the toddler.
Rory was rushed to Children’s Medical Center, where he died, police said.
“It’s not fair for a life to be taken,” neighbor Terry Lockridge told WFAA. “He would smile and laugh at me and play.”
Hall said it was apparent that the gunfire was “deliberate and intentional,” adding that the shooter was familiar with the layout of the home.
“Not only are we brokenhearted, [but] we are angry,” Hall said. “This 1-year-old baby was killed due to senseless gun violence in this city that we are determined and aggressive about eradicating in 2020.”
The shooter is still at large and authorities are asking anyone with information about the slaying to come forward.
