‘Badagry: the Joy of Return’ features a visit to the ancient city on the Atlantic Coast of Lagos State, by a multicultural group from Diaspora led by Dr David Anderson, and hosted by Hon Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/ CEO of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM).
Written, produced and directed by Ronke Macaulay, the goal is to retrace the steps of the ancestors who were held captive in the region, stolen away by ship, and sold as slaves in the Americas. But also to bring a message of solidarity and hope for a brighter future to the local community.
The documentary film had its World Premiere at the Pan African Unity Dialogue (PAUD) in New York during Black History Week in February 2020, and went on to high-level screenings in Wilmington, Delaware and at the Maryland House of Delegates, both in USA.
Despite the unprecedented challenges of the global pandemic, “Badagry: the Joy of Return” has been selected for, and screened at, several international Film Festivals across Africa, the USA, and worldwide during 2020. Most recently, it was selected as the Opening Film for the Zuma Film Festival in Abuja, Nigeria on 1st December 2020.
It will be screened today, Thursday 18 March 2021, at the joint AWDFF and IREP virtual international documentary film festival.
