Opinion: Were you able to sleep?

Pantami Buhari

Good morning, folks. I hope you all slept well? Unfortunately, I’m not sure I did. I spent my night pondering the state of the nation and was unable to sleep.

The uncertainty hanging over the future of this otherwise great nation is quite niggling. The self-inflicted pains are very much excruciating. I just couldn’t sleep. No jokes! But, were you able to sleep?

I’d like to know:

*Were you able to sleep reading the outlandish twaddle churned out by the presidency in the name of defending Isa Pantami?

*Were you able to sleep knowing that the characters currently occupying the seat of power were and are still unable to distinguish between the presidency as an institution and the person of the president?

*Were you able to sleep going through the shamelessly concocted position of the presidency, which sadly, threw silly darts at people, who obviously could reason better than their entire pack put together?

*Were you able to sleep reading your presidency asking for forgiveness for a man, who sympathised with the killers of her citizenry and trading tackles with those who chose the other end of the stick?

Were you able to sleep seeing that the baloney called ‘Pantami’s defence’ was fraught with arrogance and a “go f*k yourself” insinuation dotting the whole statement?

*Were you able to sleep knowing that had the information exposing Pantami’s terrorist tendency and unyielding fundamentalist posturing, not been dug up, he would have remained quiet and feigned such harmless innocence?

*Were you able to sleep knowing that the basic but crucial information about over 200 million people are in the custody of a man, who shares the ideals and ideological leanings of globally renowned terrorist organisations?

*Were you able to sleep knowing that the leadership of the ruling party and its governors had maintained a rather criminal silence over the Pantami matter, because they have no business siding with the people they pretend to serve?

*Were you able to sleep knowing that the different characters currently strutting the political turf in the hope of becoming the next president of Nigeria had all maintained an ignoble silence?

*Were you able to sleep knowing that the FEC did not at any point record that at least, one of its members raised the matter at their meeting and was, at the most, shut down?

*Were you able to sleep knowing that the people entrusted to keep you safe are sympathetic to a man, who once said: “Oh God, give victory to the Taliban and to Al-Qaeda…This jihad is an obligation for every single believer, especially, in Nigeria”?

*Were you able to sleep, knowing and seeing that the leadership of the country is impervious to your collective pains and anguish and is not pretentious about where it stands and with whom, even when innocent students are being daily killed, because the leadership chooses to show mercy to the ring of their killers?

*Were you able to sleep at all, seeing presidential spokespersons gallivanting about places and struggling to draw a parallel between Pantami and Kemi Adeosun and contending that Adeosun’s sins were far greater than Pantami’s?

*Were you able to sleep, honestly, knowing that if we had to throw the cards on the table and reshuffle them all, there would be absolutely nothing connecting some of the ethnic nationalities in Nigeria together – culturally, religiously, ethnically and otherwise? Isn’t it clearly a clash of civilisations?

Well, let’s not prolong this any further, the fact of the matter is that the country is in dire straits and those presently in charge are unfit for the job. Their party is to say the least unqualified to present a candidate for the same seat in the next election, if this is its best at the moment.

Even worse is the fact the difference between the two major parties is not much. While one is evidently now a “terrorist party”, the other is by profiling a “gang of robbers”. The choice, going forward, is therefore, between the devil and the deep blue sea. Is a third force feasible? Only if its members would come from Mars.

However, if you intend to move away from this ugly phase as soon as possible, you had better start to look forward to 2023 with the same zeal and determination as those itching to become president. The energy must be on the same frequency in the onerous task of diligently choosing a better evil.

With your cards and reasoning not reformatted with cheap and condescending vote-buying, you can change the course of history in 2023, when another election is due. May be then, you can sleep and perhaps, with just one eye closed.
