Doctors misdiagnosed a young woman with cervical cancer, prompting her husband to flee with her two children. It was later discovered that she had no disease at all.

Awuor Olivia, a Kenyan woman, had been having pain in her pelvic area and chose to go to the hospital to have it looked out.

Her first thought was that the pain was caused by warts on her pelvic area. She had a biopsy, and the results took two weeks to come back

“When the results came back I was told that I had cancer of the cervix and it was at its fourth stage. This meant that I had to just start treatment right away. It also meant spending lots of money on the treatment. I informed my husband about the diagnosis and he left me and my children saying he could not live with a dying woman.”, she revealed in a interview.

She began looking for ways to ease the financial load she faced when her husband abandoned her and her children.

She tried contacting the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to see if part of the cancer treatment was covered, but her efforts were futile. Because her medical report was not stamped, the NHIF refused to accept it.

Olivia considered obtaining a second opinion from a different hospital as she considered how to overcome the obstacle without her husband’s help while still being able to care for her 12-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son.

It was at this point that the doctors at the second hospital revealed to her that the pain in her pelvis was a result of the work she does which involves standing for long hours.

It became clear that the doctors at the first hospital misdiagnosed her with cancer of the cervix.

“I had surgery to remove the warts. Then I went to have another test to check again if truly I had cervical cancer and the results came out negative,” Olivia said.

Yes, now she has no cervical cancer but her disloyal husband had already betrayed and abandoned her and the kids.

“I am so much in pain because my husband left me because of these results that were not factual. I just need someone to talk to,” she lamented.
