A Fuji icon, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, has also joined other Nigerian artistes to naijarise the popular South African genre, Amapiano.

He may, by this act, be adding to the hot debate on the origin and owners of the genre.

Recall in 2022, there was a controversy over the same genre after South African artiste, DJ Maphorisa, called out a fan for suggesting Nigerian music star Davido popularised the Amapiano in a Twitter post.

But trust Nigerians; they hit back.

“Dear South Africans, no matter what you do or say, it won’t change the fact that Nigeria influenced Amapiano to be what it is now. No one knew what it was till Wizkid and Davido Jumped on it,” wrote one Oghenerie on Twitter.

Don’t also forget that Asake Ololade Mr. Money has also jumped on it when he featured Olamide.

Amapiano, a Zulu or Xhosa word loosely translated to “the pianos”, is a subgenre of house and Kwaito music that emerged in South Africa in the mid-2010s. It is a hybrid of deep house, jazz, and lounge music characterised by synths and wide percussive basslines.
