Abubakar Atiku Abubakar defection to APC signals strong support for President Tinubu ahead of 2027 elections

Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday, 15 January 2026, at the National Assembly in Abuja, declaring his intention to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

The move was marked by a ceremonial reception led by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin and senior APC leaders from the North-East.

Speaking to party officials, Abubakar, popularly known as Abba, confirmed his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and expressed his full alignment with the APC, citing personal conviction shaped by recent political developments.

Abba also announced the dissolution of the Haske Atiku Organisation, a political support group he founded in 2022, instructing all coordinators and members to integrate immediately into the APC.

He said his decision was influenced by the leadership style of Senator Barau and the performance and policy direction of the Tinubu administration.

“I am committed to working closely with APC leaders to advance the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda and support his second-term ambition,” Abubakar stated, emphasising his dedication to the party’s vision.

Comrade Mustapha Salihu, APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), described the defection as a significant political development, highlighting its reflection of the party’s growing appeal.

“Abba’s entry underscores the strength of our policies and programmes, and we welcome him with full integration and equal opportunities,” he said.

Senator Barau praised Abubakar’s decision as a bold, ideologically driven move, asserting it reflected genuine belief in Tinubu’s leadership rather than personal or family considerations.

The defection adds momentum to political realignments in the North-East ahead of the 2027 general elections and is likely to influence strategic alliances within the region.

Abubakar Atiku Abubakar’s alignment with the ruling party marks a notable chapter in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape, signalling increasing support for the Tinubu administration among emerging political figures.
