Adamu Garba makes bold exit from active politics

Former APC presidential aspirant says the demands of leading IPI Group’s AI-first technology drive now require his full attention.

Former All Progressives Congress presidential aspirant Adamu B. Garba II, speaking from Nigeria, announced his withdrawal from active political participation, saying the demands of his leadership roles at IPI Group Limited now require his full attention.

Garba said the decision followed careful reflection and would see him concentrate on his responsibilities as Executive Chairman and Chief Platform Architect of the technology group.

The announcement marks a notable change for a politician who spent about nine years building a public profile around political participation, youth inclusion, technology and national development.

In his statement addressed to party leaders, associates, supporters and the wider public, Garba said his decision was driven less by a rejection of public service than by the growing demands of his technology work.

The former aspirant said his responsibilities at IPI Group involve sustained personal attention and technical depth that cannot easily be combined with heavy political engagement.

“In all honesty, they cannot be carried alongside heavy political participation without one or the other suffering,” Garba said.

Garba’s decision comes as IPI Group undertakes a substantial technology and organisational push centred on an AI-first approach.

Reports on his announcement indicate that the company is rebuilding five of its flagship platforms, Crowwe, Justitia, Envlope, Sigma and Tablars.

As Chief Platform Architect, Garba said he has a direct role in ensuring that the platforms meet the company’s standards in architecture, engineering and product development.

That responsibility, he suggested, has reached a point where dividing his attention between technology and frontline politics would risk weakening both pursuits.

Garba therefore said he had chosen to give his “full and exclusive attention” to developing an AI-first enterprise and using technology to contribute to society.

The move does not appear to represent a complete retreat from public-minded work.

Instead, Garba presented technology as the new vehicle through which he intends to pursue his broader ambitions for Nigeria and Africa.

“My commitment to nation-building has not changed. Only the platform through which I pursue it has,” Garba said.

The distinction is significant for a politician whose career has often sat at the intersection of technology and public affairs.

Garba first attracted wider national attention through his presidential ambitions ahead of the 2019 election and remained involved in the APC political space in the years that followed.

He later sought the party’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2023 election.

His 2022 presidential bid provided one of the clearest examples of his criticism of the financial barriers surrounding Nigerian politics.

Garba withdrew from the APC presidential race after the party priced its expression of interest and nomination forms at N100 million.

His campaign had raised approximately N83.2 million through private and online donations, but he argued that the cost of the forms risked making political participation excessively dependent on wealth.

Contemporary reports recorded his pledge to return the contributions to donors.

The episode helped reinforce his image as a technology entrepreneur attempting to challenge some of the established conventions of Nigerian political participation.

Garba subsequently remained publicly associated with politics, but his latest announcement takes his relationship with political activity in a different direction.

Rather than announcing another political platform or a future electoral bid, he is now directing his energy towards IPI Group and its technology ambitions.

Garba said the nine-year political journey had shaped him and expressed gratitude to the people who supported, encouraged and invited him into political spaces over the years.

The tone of the announcement was therefore less a dramatic farewell than a deliberate change of course.

For Garba, the immediate challenge appears to be turning the considerable attention surrounding artificial intelligence into practical technology products, while strengthening an indigenous company operating in an increasingly competitive digital economy.

The decision also reflects a broader question facing technology entrepreneurs who become politically active: whether political influence is best pursued through electoral participation or through building institutions, products and infrastructure outside government.

Garba has now chosen the latter, at least for the present.

His announcement does not indicate that he has abandoned his interest in Nigeria’s development.

Rather, he argues that the means of pursuing that interest have changed.

For supporters who followed his political journey, the shift may feel unexpected.

For those familiar with his long-standing emphasis on technology, however, the move represents a return to the field where his professional responsibilities are most immediate.

After nine years in active political engagement, Adamu Garba’s exit from frontline politics places technology, artificial intelligence and enterprise building at the centre of his next chapter.
