Osun Governor Adeleke visits President Tinubu at Aso Rock, presents Certificate of Return

Re-elected Osun governor presents his Certificate of Return at Aso Rock as his post-election engagement with President Tinubu takes on wider political significance.

Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke of Osun State visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, 20 August 2026, presenting his Certificate of Return to the Nigerian president five days after securing a second term in the Osun governorship election.

The meeting, held behind closed doors, was Adeleke’s first known encounter with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa since the 15 August election.

Adeleke arrived at about 5:20pm and was accompanied by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu before proceeding to the President’s office.

The presentation gave a formal and quietly symbolic dimension to Adeleke’s return to office. The certificate had been presented to him by the Independent National Electoral Commission in Osogbo on Wednesday, 19 August, following his victory in the governorship poll.

For Adeleke, the moment came after a closely fought contest that produced one of the more consequential political results in the South-West ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The Accord Party candidate polled 511,067 votes to defeat All Progressives Congress candidate Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, who recorded 444,815 votes.

The 66,252-vote margin gave Adeleke victory across 19 of Osun’s 30 local government areas, while Oyebamiji won 11.

The result was particularly notable because Adeleke did not seek re-election under the Peoples Democratic Party, the platform on which he won his first term in 2022.

He moved to the Accord Party, while the Osun PDP nevertheless backed his bid for another term.

That political history makes the Aso Rock meeting more than a routine courtesy call.

It brings together a president of the ruling APC and a governor who won re-election on an opposition platform, but who has repeatedly expressed support for Tinubu’s bid for a second presidential term in 2027.

Adeleke had publicly reaffirmed that position months before the Osun election, describing Tinubu as a leader of the South-West and saying his support for the President was in the region’s interest.

Tinubu, for his part, moved quickly after the election to congratulate Adeleke. In a statement issued by the State House on 16 August, the President said he had called the governor to congratulate him and described the result as a reflection of the confidence Osun voters had placed in Adeleke.

“I called Governor Ademola Adeleke earlier today to congratulate him on his election victory in Osun State,” Tinubu said, adding that the governor should now unite the people of Osun “regardless of the political choices they made at the election”.

Tinubu also praised the other contestants and commended the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies for what he described as a peaceful and transparent election.

His response helped establish a conciliatory tone around a contest that had generated considerable political tension before polling day.

Adeleke has adopted a similar language of reconciliation since his victory.

At the certificate presentation in Osogbo, the governor said he held no grudge against his political adversaries and framed the document as a mandate belonging to the people of Osun rather than to him personally.

“This certificate does not belong to Ademola Adeleke alone. It belongs to the people of Osun State,” the governor said, dedicating the mandate to voters and calling for healing after the election.

That emphasis on healing is significant because the election was preceded by accusations of intimidation and political violence.

Adeleke himself had repeatedly warned supporters about threats during the campaign, while the post-election period brought renewed attention to those affected by violence and disruption.

In response, Adeleke announced a ₦500 million Election Violence Victims Endowment Fund for verified victims and affected families.

He said a verification and relief committee would oversee the process and that assistance would not be restricted by political affiliation, religion, ethnicity, gender or social status.

The governor also said the Adeleke family would provide scholarships through the Springtime Development Foundation for the children and dependants of people who lost their lives during the electoral process.

The gesture added a human dimension to what was otherwise a formal post-election ceremony.

The significance of Thursday’s meeting therefore extends beyond the presentation of a document.

Adeleke’s victory has strengthened his political standing in Osun, while his continuing alignment with Tinubu on the 2027 presidential race creates an unusual relationship between an opposition-state governor and the President’s governing party.

The details of the private discussion at the Presidential Villa were not made public.

There was no immediate indication that the two leaders had reached any new political agreement, and it would be premature to read the meeting alone as evidence of a formal alliance.

What is clearer is the changing political landscape after the Osun election.

Adeleke now begins a second term with a fresh mandate, while Tinubu enters the next phase of his political calculations with an influential South-West governor who has already declared support for his 2027 ambition.

For Osun, however, the immediate challenge is less about political arithmetic than governance.

Tinubu has urged Adeleke to use his renewed mandate to bring the state together, while the governor has promised reconciliation, support for election victims and a renewed focus on development.

The exchange at Aso Rock consequently offered a measured close to a fiercely contested election: a victorious governor presenting the document that confirms his mandate to the president, and both leaders publicly emphasising democracy, stability and the need to move beyond the divisions of the campaign.
