Adeyina says cost of living shaped US midterm elections

Nigerian-American politician and member-elect of the Georgia House of Representatives, Segun Adeyina, has said the rising cost of living was a major factor behind voters’ decisions in the November 3, 2026, United States midterm elections.

Adeyina, who represents District 110 in Georgia, made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday, November 6.

He explained that Americans were more concerned about their everyday financial difficulties than political campaign slogans, particularly the rising costs of housing, food and healthcare.

According to him, voters assessed political leadership based on whether they could afford basic necessities and manage household expenses.

Well, of course it boils down to what’s going on in people’s kitchen tables.

People did not vote based on political slogans.

People voted on issues happening on their kitchen tables, he said.

Adeyina noted that many households had struggled with questions about paying rent or mortgages, purchasing groceries and accessing healthcare services.

He identified affordability as one of the major issues President Donald Trump had failed to adequately address, adding that the United States’ involvement in the conflict with Iran had further increased economic pressure on citizens.

He described the outcome of the elections as a significant setback for the Republicans, saying the scale of the Democrats’ performance was more than what some observers had described as a “blue wave”.

“People showed up and turned out to vote on issues that concerned them on their kitchen tables,” he added.

The lawmaker-elect also said his re-election reflected the confidence residents of his constituency had in his leadership and public service.

Adeyina, who first won the District 110 seat in 2022, said his return for a third term demonstrated that constituents remained satisfied with the opportunities and services he had provided.

He described himself as a proud Nigerian-American and said his initial election had given him an opportunity to establish a relationship with the community.

According to him, his constituency comprises Grayson, Snellville, Lawrenceville and Loganville.

He maintained that the continued support of residents demonstrated their confidence in his leadership and commitment to representing their interests.

The November 3, 2026, US midterm elections were influenced by several issues, including the cost of living, healthcare, employment and the economic implications of the conflict involving Iran.

A post-election survey conducted by The Washington Post and NORC also identified economic concerns and dissatisfaction with the direction of the country as significant factors behind the election results.

Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, making gains in several traditionally Republican states.
