‘Afghan takeover’ Mayor, Zarifa Ghafari of Afghanistan insists she will not leave

Following the take over of Afghanistan’s government by the Taliban, Zarifa Ghafari, one of the country’s first female mayors, has revealed why she won’t flee the country.

Recall that Afghanistan plunged into turmoil as the Taliban took over the country yesterday when they invaded Kabul, the nation’s capital, 20 years after the US chased them out.

This led to the President fleeing the country.

However, Ghafari, who is the Mayor of Maidan Shar, during an interview with British newspaper Inews, said she has no plans of fleeing the country just like the President did.

She said she had nowhere to run to, adding that she cannot just leave her family behind.

The Mayor further revealed that she knows that they will come for her, stating that has fully prepared herself for whatever the outcome will be.

“I’m sitting here waiting for them to come. There is no one to help me or my family.

”I’m just sitting with them and my husband. And they will come for people like me and kill me. I can’t leave my family. And anyway, where would I go?” she said.

Ghafari, 27, is Afghanistan’s youngest Mayor and the first woman to hold the office in Maidan Shar in Wardak province.

Her father, General Abdul Wasi Ghafari, was gunned down on 15 November last year, just 20 days after the third attempt on her life failed.
