The Anambra State Police Command on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, arrested four men in Ukwulu and Amichi, Anambra State, over an alleged plot to murder a businessman and unlawfully take possession of his landed properties, with police recovering two firearms and live ammunition during the operation.

The suspects are Obiora Nwankwo, 38, Chiadikobi Okoye, 36, Emmanuel Mboko, 42, and Ifeanyi Obi, 37. Police said the arrests followed intelligence-led operations coordinated under the direction of Anambra State Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama.

According to the command, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad in Awkuzu worked with Agunechemba security personnel attached to Amichi and Nnewi to disrupt the alleged plan.

The suspects were arrested at separate locations in Ukwulu and Amichi after what police described as credible intelligence gathering. Two firearms and live ammunition were recovered in the process.

Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga said preliminary investigations had linked the four men to an alleged plan to kill the unnamed businessman and subsequently take control of his property.

“The breakthrough was recorded on the evening of Wednesday,” Ikenga said in a statement, adding that the operation had “disrupted the alleged criminal plot”.

The businessman has not been publicly identified by the police, and the command has not disclosed the alleged value, size or ownership history of the landed properties at the centre of the investigation.

The police said investigators are now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged conspiracy, determine the individual roles of the four suspects and identify anyone else who may have been involved.

The four men remain in police custody pending the conclusion of the investigation. Any eventual prosecution will require the allegations to be tested before a court, and the suspects remain presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The arrests come as Anambra continues to expand a security system that combines conventional law enforcement with community-based security operations.

The state’s 2025 Homeland Security Law formally established Agunechemba as a structured security outfit intended to complement existing law enforcement agencies in preventing and detecting crime.

Agunechemba was unveiled alongside Operation Udo Ga-Achị in January 2025 as part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s wider response to insecurity.

At its launch, Soludo said the new security architecture would address threats including kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and land grabbing, while encouraging residents to provide information to security agencies.

The approach has also attracted scrutiny. In April 2025, the governor’s Special Adviser on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, acknowledged concerns that criminal elements had infiltrated parts of Agunechemba and said verification measures were being undertaken.

The state has since continued to tighten oversight of the outfit. In May 2026, authorities ordered Agunechemba personnel to stop wearing masks while on duty, saying the measure was intended to improve accountability and prevent people from using the security outfit’s identity to commit violent crimes.

Recent operations have also shown the continued emphasis on proactive intelligence gathering.

In July 2026, an Agunechemba joint security team in Enugwu-Ukwu conducted a bush-combing operation targeting suspected criminal hideouts, while screening farmers and other legitimate occupants encountered during the exercise. The state government reported no casualties from that operation.

The latest arrests in Ukwulu are therefore significant beyond the immediate allegations.

They illustrate the increasingly intelligence-led character of security operations in Anambra, while also highlighting the continuing risks posed by armed crime and disputes involving valuable property.

For now, however, the central questions remain unanswered: who commissioned the alleged attack, what precisely motivated the intended takeover of the land, and whether other people were involved.
